Bright Turqoise Bathroom

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to use bright turquoise walls in a bathroom?

I saw a magazine article about using turquoise in a bathroom, and they showed different bathrooms using different shades of turqoise, some brighter and some softer.

I really liked the brighter turqoise and painted my bathroom with a bright shade, but now I'm not sure how to decorate to tone it or anchor it down. I added a softer turquoise shower curtain and used a dark brown rug and towels. The bathroom has outdated hollywood style lighting that will eventually be changed, but for now it is making the bathroom seem overwhelmingly bright. Also, the bathroom does not have any daylight.

Any suggestions on what I should do?

Can you switch to lower wattage bulbs while you wait to change your light fixture? Is there room on the walls for artwork or anything else that could break up the expanse of bright turquoise?

    Pictures would be helpful :-)

We used very bright colors in our office, an aqua called Rhapsody (I think) and a limey green called Honeydew Melon by Behr, we anchored the colors by incorporating a lot of white into the room. The bright colors may not be for everyone but we love it.

Lukkiirish- I've always been attracted to bright colors! They are just fun and exciting to me! Maybe I should make an accent wall of a different color to break up the brighter turquoise, but then I'm not sure what color I should go with and if it should be another bright color or a soft color. What do you think?

leafy02 - I'm not sure if I can switch the type of lightbulbs or not, but that is something to look into. They are the exposed hollywood style lights with I believe six giant round bulbs. I'll have to take some pics and post them for you. What's the easiest way of uploading the pics on the forum?

Honestly, it's hard to say without a visual, can you post a pic? Seems I usually end up having 3 different colors in our rooms. With this room, I've used the green, blue and white as my primary colors. These pics are from when we were working on it, sorry I don't have something more recent.

I just painted my LR Aqua chiffon...a bright turquoise. I used lots of white for trim (baseboards, ceiling, fireplace)and black & white fabrics. If I think about a bathroom I think the same concept would work...white tub...toilet...sink...woodwork. you could use a black and white (true white...not off white) houndstooth or toile fabric for a shower curtain. You could use pops of hot pink (opposite the color wheel) for an accent color. I'll try to post my inspiration photo so you can see how great turquoise and black and white looks together. I'll post this first and follow with the inspiration photo. I can post of photo of my LR as soon as the boxes and mess of moving back in is cleaned up.

Ladybug pick up a dimmer switch to use on those lights. It is good while you are in transition and also for a nice soft glow when entertaining.

Here are photos of my bathroom. I want to replace the hollywood lights and the wooden towel bars. I was thinking of putting in either silver or black towel bars. Any advice is appreciated!

I hope the photo links below work! Here goes!

no they don't work. You need to post the photos with html code which from what I understand is available for each of your pictures in flickr

Love that black and white sofa. Does that belong to you Storklady, that is so good looking.

Newdawn, no, the sofa is not mine, but I wish it were! I posted them to try to support my claim that black and white is a natural for complimenting bright colors. I think it really grounds those colors and takes the shock out of them. I'm using bright turquoise and black & white in my own home...almost done with it and can post photos soon.

Ladybug, I like your bright T. color and wouldn't tone it down. If it were my bathroom this is what I'd do: Paint the vanity white and replace the hardware to spiff it up, if you can't take down the slab mirror and replace it with two black round mirrors over the sink then I'd frame all 4 sides of the mirror with moulding painted black. Don't buy skinny moulding...the wood trim on the mirror now is too skinny in my opinion. I'd buy new fauctes...those are kind of dated IMHO. I'd buy a black and white patterned shower curtain...either houndstooth check or a toile or damask pattern. I'd use thick white throw rugs to offset the beige tiles and they really won't be so noticed. I'd change the countertop too...but that may not be doable and with all the other changes and uses of white it will blend fine. What is your counertop material? I'd really change out the mirrors if possible. I saw a pretty round black mirror at Hobby Lobby...it even had a bevel...for $39 recently. The frame is plastic...however...it looks good and on the wall no one would be the wiser unless they touhd it. I have it over my fireplace right now. I wanted a wood mirror but I can't afford $300 right now due to a remodel of both the LR and kitchen. Honestly, it looks super and you can't tell it's plastic. I'll take a photo and upload it later tonight or tomorrow. I'd also use white towls in your bath...they are classic IMO.

Here are some ideas for a shower curtain and mirrors over the sink. I'm sure there are lots of black and white fabrics that would look great if you don't like damask or houndstooth check. They are just two of my personal faves...even zebra stripes would look cool. I agree you should get a dimmer switch until you can change the fixture. HD and Lowe's have reasonably priced fixtures. You might check them out.

I think storklady is right on for all the suggestions. Black and white will truly complement the turquoise (which by the way is beautiful). Black towels layered with white and turquoise. A picture on the wall by the vanity would be great too, something that picks up the turquoise in a black frame.

    SOME INSPIRATION PICTURES

I think storklady is right on with her suggestions. I love turquoise and I really like your walls. You could even do the shower curtain in a textured white or a zebra print. I found one made by Watershed, which is great because it does not require a liner because the fabric sheds the water. T.J.Maxx has them sometimes. I definitely would use white for the vanity. It is amazing what that will do to lighten up the room. I love the inspiration pics. They look like some that I saw on the House of Turquoise website. Some real eye candy! Have fun and keep us posted!

Thank you all for the suggestions! I do like the look of the black, white, and turquoise. Would brown, white, and turquoise work too? I just recently bought my brown towels and rug and would hate to not use them.

I think the dimmer switch is a great idea! I'll have to look into that soon! With one in I'd be able to soften the light a little bit and the room wouldn't look so bright.

Vampiress and storklady, thank you both for the photo inspirations and advice. They are absolutely great! I have been wanting to paint the vanity white so that's absolutely on the list, as well as changing the hardware. The mirror definitely needs some help. I was thinking of putting a different frame around it, but wasn't sure what to do. Thank you for your suggestions on that. I think I'll see what I can get for moulding and find out how to attach it to the mirror. Do you know how to do that?
Replacing the faucets is also definitely on the list. They are very outdated, and I haven't liked how they look since we moved in. I'm honestly not sure what the countertop is made out of. I think it's a cheap countertop that the builder originally put in, and I would like to replace it with a nice white one. I also would like to replace the towel bars and hooks. What color would you suggest for those? Black, silver?

    Great suggestions! Thank you all!

I'd match the towel bars finish to the finish you choose for the hardware on the vanity and faucets. I think it would look best if all hardware and faucets were the same (all brushed metal, all chrome, all nickel, all oil rubbed bronze,c.) Since you asked for my opinion - I honestly don't think the brown, white and turquoise would have the same punch or graphic effect that black, white and turquoise has. I think it would look just fine..nothing wrong with it...but I don't think it would give that WOW you are looking for and that everyone would react to. Maybe you have another bathroom where you could use the brown items. Just my two cents...only you can decide for sure. Keep us posted. Oh, yea, regarding the moulding on the mirror...check out the blog Young House Love. I think they did the same. They have a "how to" list on their blog. If not, just google it. I've read about it many times online...just haven't done it myself.

Brown, white and turquoise would be fab, too. I have a turquoise-ish shade in my living room, and I have dark wood along with light fabrics. My drapes have brown & turquoise and I love the look.

I want to paint our MB turquoise, but I need it to be a dusty, gray tone, not bright. I have an antique gold ceiling, almost a bronze color, and I think that with the white molding I'm putting up, the turquoise would be gorgeous. I am planning to use orange as my accents in that room.

You could certainly use your brown towels and rug, it will have a softer look.

Add dark brown color to the frame of your mirror, change out your towel holder and maybe a white shower curtain to link with the vanity. Then I think you will need to add a piece of bright color to the room, such as a vase with with tropical flowers in it or a colorful poster or a matching vanity set.

Thank you all so much! I'm going to take all of these ideas and hopefully make some changes soon. Don't worry, I'll post pics! :)

What a beautiful shade of turquoise! I can't wait to see what you do next.
