Pattern or your-own-design?

Someone asked if using a pattern was OK for the Holiday Challenge recently and that started me wondering. I thought it might be a good topic for discussion.

Do you mostly use patterns, always use patterns, or do you do your own designs? I'm not thinking one way is better or worse than another, I'm just curious.

I almost always use a pattern but I'll add things like a prairie point border are some other fancier border to put something of my own in the quilt.

I have never designed my own quilt totally and really look up to those that can do it.

I have done my own designs, usually applique baby quilts or landscape quilts. I think I use more quilt patterns from books than from separately bought patterns, but I do have some patterns that were either on sale or that I just could not resist!

I do both. I'm like Teresa, I often get ideas from books and magazines and draft it up myself. I seldom use a purchased pattern but have done a few.

I've never used a pattern...generally, look at books, see what I like and make my own patterns. I find it much easier than trying to conform to what someone else thinks.

I'm new to quilting, and so far I've fallen in love with classic patterns. I have Apple Core and Cathedral Windows underway, but even after those are pieced I'd love to do an Improved Nine Patch and a Kaleidoscope. My grandmother left me a Double Wedding Ring top made from my playclothes, and I'd love to make one from my sons' playclothes (if the mice stay out of the boxes long enough.) I really need to move those boxes out of the garage.....

Wow, those aren't the easiest ones, I'm impressed. No, I don't believe I've ever followed a pattern, at least completely, even in my sewing. (not that I have done that many quilted projects compared to most of you, but I'm starting to get a quilt history). Quilting just invites an impromptu ad lib.

I have done both but I mostly use patterns. I get them from magazines frequently but when I was selling I used commercial patterns and books, also. I usually use my own idea as to fabric choices and imbellishments changing things a little to make it different. I've done a house from my design and few other wall hangings. I guess the stacked 4 patch as really my design in a way but it really is a classic pattern-------not sure how to classify things like that. Jayne

I started using only patterns and have now moved to getting ideas from pictures and using those to put together my own patterns.

When I started quilting, I copied a quilt I had. The second and third were drafted from classic block patterns. Next I adapted classics. When I started the pictoral quilts, the designs were all original. I have made two other quilts using the Celtic acorn design, which was not mine. In those quilts the personal stamp was in the quilting design.

For my scrap quilt, I used a quilt in a picture for the pattern, so I guess I've come full circle. Carole

I can't even remember the last time I made a quilt from a pattern! I usually go with an original design using traditional block patterns.
