Cabinet Costs

Since I've been reading a lot of posts on cabinet costs and how to compare, I thought we could start thread on how much we are paying, for what (amount & type of cabs, wood, finish as well as special features) and where we are located since it can be hard to get a handle on how much is "fair" for a given cabinet line. I'm happy to volunteer my info at least. . .

Showplace Cabinets (semi-custom line)

Stained Maple with a caramel glaze

Square Raised panel style

Approx 25 linear feet of base cabs, 12 feet of upper cabs and a 72"x39" island with a bookcase on one end of it (Kitchen is 17x15)

Cabinets are 36" and price includes filler & crown molding to take uppers all the way to the ceiling

2 rollout trays

2 deep drawers under cooktop

2 glass fronted cabinets

1 pantry cabinet with 5 rollout trays

trash pullout

spice rack on door

tray divider

1 super susan

Cabinet construction is all plywood boxes, dovetailed drawers with nice undermount drawer glides (blum), solid wood doors etc

I opted NOT to get the soft close/full extension (that would have been $440)

Price for this layout was $14,500

I am located in MA, but purchased the cabinets in NH - we will pick them up instead of having them delivered to save 5% sales tax.

Hope this helps someone who needs to get a handle on how much cabinets cost and what features you might get for your money.

Fyi, similar layout & features were $21,000 with Omega, $17,500 with Dura Supreme and $18,500 for Brookhaven.

I am going to have an appointment with a Showplace dealer on Tues. I have never seen the line in person, but online they look nice!

I have gotten a price online for Starmark cabinets from MFKUSA for $7300 delivered! I have small/medium sized kitchen.

Price includes 3/8" plywood sides, Blumotion glides,
raised panel mitered door, maple, stained no glaze

    8 base cabs: 1 w/ rollout shelves, 1 w/garbage pullout,
6 36" walls: 2 w/glass & matching interior, 1 custom sized open wall cab w/ valance and matching interior
    pantry w/roll outs
    3" cove molding
    undercab molding
    misc. moldings
    2 beaded plywood panels
    3 simple corbels
a couple custom upgrades on base cabs (extended styles)
    toe kick valance on island

Pretty simple design, not too many bells and whistles

I don't think that any other company can beat this price for the quality...we'll see

Afr, this is hitting very, very close to home...I am getting Showplace, natural "cashmere" maple with caramel glaze for perimeter, 39 x 60 island in soft cream, with a total of about 25 linear feet (base and uppers -- wasn't sure if those angled end shelves count or not so LF is approximate), partial overlay to save $, "A" (lowest) price group, not a lot of bells & whistles...but $19500! What gives? And she's making me buy my own glass! I've got 1 custom tall cabinet, a couple of end panels, I'm being charged 8% sales tax, they were shipped to CA, but stillll....

Pls post pix when available. My cab's are being installed Wed.

    Bluekit...
What door style are you getting?
Where do you live in Cali? I hope it is not thru the same dealer...I might as well cancel my appt before I waste my time...

I'm very near Thousand Oaks, Vta County. I know the KD, she's been very good with design, tile selection, etc., but sometimes I felt like she only knew how to buy at Nordstrom and there are times/items when I just need to go to Target! The door styles are Breckenridge for natural maple/perimeter and Summit for cream/island. I did have the feeling that even though Thomasville at HD might start off cheaper, by the time it was upgraded to Showplace quality it would end up more expensive -- the difference between buying a fully loaded Camry and a standard "everything's included" Lexus LS, if that makes sense. (please don't blast me, those who know cars!) If I had found this forum while in the planning stage I probably would have shopped around a bit harder.

shanny75... which door style did you go with in Starmark through MFKUSA? I read about that in another post that you were on. I'm interested in either the Sheridan or Windham (this may be my pick) door style in maple with some kind of toffee stain. Almost all lowers with drawers. Some uppers with glass fronts, maybe the kid that run horizontally and tip up. I'm going to be comparing them to IKEA boxes with Scherrs' doors to see which I do better on. I'll of course keep in mind that with Starmark through MFKUSA I won't have to assemble. I'll also probably get one bid from some mid line at Lowes/HD just to compare.

all lower cabinet drawers with softclose and full extension
All decorative panels on ends of cabinets and around 6" peninsula

I love this thread. I too am trying to figure out the IKEA versus Starmark. So far I have the IKEA cab pricing, but don't have my Scherr's door price figured out. I think I'll be in the $8,000 range for 32 linear feet of uppers and lowers (total). That includes assembly and installation. I don't think that price-wise I can do better, but I could probably make it an easier process.

cali.. are you having someone assemble the IKEA boxes, doors/drawers and install all? At a glance I find the Scherrs' price list confusing but I haven't spoken to them yet as I'm far far away from that part of the remodeling process.

Question to anyone... and I hate to sound ignorant... but what is the difference between a super susan and a lazy susan?

Hi! For those of you with questions about the Starmark cabs thru MKFUSA....

I have not yet chosen my door, but have gotten a price for the doors which I like. All happen to be in the same price group (#9). The doors range from #1-13. Low to high price point. The difference on a 36 36 wall with butt doors from a 9 to the most costly 13 would be about $72.

    Remodelfla-

The Sheridan door is new so I don't see a number code for it, but it looks like a #13
The Windham #11 is almost like the Windsor that I am considering but with applied molding.

    36 36 wall

    Door 9-369
    Door 11-417
    Door 13-441

If you want glazing or special finish you add 16% I think.

I am debating on are Medina, Prescott and Windsor.

The MKUSA website hasn't been updated with the new prices but keep in mind that the Starmark Collection all have blumotion standard now. The "custom" line has 1/2" plywood and the "collection" line has 3/8".

If you all need help let me know I have memorized the spec book! I think they are a great deal!

    have fun ...it's addicting

    Also....

Starmark and Fielstone cabs are one in the same. I like to cross reference gallery pics on both websites.

Some of the doors have different names.

I like the Fielstone site because on the cross section of the door....what a weirdo ;)

Here is a link that might be useful: fieldstone

shanny... you're no weirdo... I have catalogues from both companies and had written to them awhile back to ask if they were one and the same. I, in fact, have brocheres for about 2 years now from about 10 different companies and won't even be finalizing decisions for about a year. Now that borders on a sickness. What I didn't know at the time is that there was a cyber world of other fantics such as myself that created my favorite new place to spend time reading!

Starmark may have improved over the years, but I would like to add to the conversation my experiences with these cabinets. We put cherry Starmark into a kitchen in 1993. Many cabinets arrived damaged and the company was very slow to provide new cabinets. In fact, they provided only new doors (sans hinges), and the installer had to install the hinges, which were those barrel type that cut into the door, and then install the door. Needless to say, it just never looked as good as the factory installed ones. We had problems with all the hinges from day one. We were constantly taking out the screws and filling the holes so the doors would not fall off. The face frame on the corner cabinet cracked badly. The finish wore off some of the doors within 3 years and I had to tough them up with polyurethane. These cabinets had a "lifetime guarantee." However, because our original retailer went out of business, Starmark refused to honor the guarantee. Your mileage may vary, but I refused to even look at them again.

teched... thanks for the insight. I feel like this thread is getting hijacked so I might start a new thread asking for comparisons on quality. Either way I will probably invest in a sample door from Scherr's. Starmark/Expo I can see at a vendor site.

remodelfla, yes the price I just gave ($8,000) breaks down as $2,400 for the cab boxes, approx. $2,000 for doors and $3,600 for someone to assemble and install. I've thought about saving money by at least doing the assembly ourselves and letting the pro do the installation, but I want to see what we're getting into before I make that leap. With a full-time job and two kids, I just don't see how I can find the time to go and assemble all those boxes. Plus, I have to consider the importance of staying married to my husband and not either killing him or divorcing him because of the stress and frustration of assembling cabinets!

To answer on our Showplace quote - my dealer is Norfolk Factory Direct and I'm pretty sure they get Showplace at a discount (and pass some of those savings on to the consumer) because they do a ton of volume. They started life as a company that provided cabs to a lot of new developments and condo buildings using Showplace so I think that is how the savings are being passed on. Also, when I squawked a bit on price the KD gave me access to a more expensive door style (Covington Wide) for the price of the Pendleton I had originally selected. The price of a given cabinet line can vary A LOT depending on where you buy it - some dealers mark up more than others. Also, if you are uncomfortable with the price you may find that there is more flexibility than you know - in addition to the doors, I also got the KD to chop off another $350 from the price because she hadn't clearly explained things to me. That gave me the impression that some costs might disappear if they feel the sale is in jeopardy.

I went to my appointment with the Showplace dealer on Tues. I will hopefully be getting a good price and maybe a job out of it! They are looking for someone to train for a kitchen designer and they thought I would be great! Imagine that! The best part is that it is very part time and I can set my own schedule...kinda

Sorry if this was kind of off topic

I'll keep you all posted on the cost of Showplace.

    Shanny,

I'd be tempted to wait and get an employee discount!

    :>)

14 linear feet of base cabinets (4 sets of all drawer cabinets, 1 pull out drawer cabinet, 1 pull out trash cabinet, sink cabinet)
7 linear feet of upper cabinets (30" tall, glass fronted, glass shelves)
88" high cabinet, with 2 deep drawers, oven shelf, microwave shelf, 18" cabinet at the top
88" high fridge cabinet, with 18" cabinet at the top
All with integrated handles, dampers for all drawers and doors, fully extending drawers.

$5,100 for top of range cabinet style from IKEA.

    Hi all,

Well I got my quote back from Showplace cabs and it was alot higher than Starmark....12,000+ compared to 7300

But that did include a few different sizes, island legs and tax.

But the good news is that they hired me to train as a kitchen designer!!!

So with that being said, we are going to work something out on the price to make us all happy and meet in the middle somewhere! I guess you can call it an employee discount. They also offer better pricing for counters than I was going to get at Lowes so that will make up some of the difference. The Showplace cabinets are very pretty and I think I will be happy with them.
