I really like mine in the corner because it free's all the walls for other things. We have the TV on a console near the FP and it's perfect for watching TV and a roaring fire at the same time.

If you put your's in a corner will you still put the TV on top? If not, try the corner first w/the TV in another spot. If you don't like it then you can mount the TV with the FP moved to a wall.

Our living room is small (about 11' wide and 12' deep) and only has three walls; I wish our fireplace was in the corner. Instead it's on the shorter wall. We have too many things in the living room (piano, dresser/tv/components, couch, chair, ottoman, bookshelf, and sewing table and sometimes a coffee table -- I move it around depending on how I need it) and I think if the fireplace were in the corner we could use the space a little better.

I personally don't like the tv above a fireplace, so I would vote for corner if you otherwise have to place the tv above fireplace.

I love having mine in the corner, and the TV along the wall to the right of it. Even though we're in Texas, we use the FP all winter, it's an important part of our living room.

We have a corner gas fireplace in our FR and a brick corner FP in our kitchen. What I like is that they function without taking up an entire wall. In our LR the fireplace is more of a focal point and functions well where it is located.

I'm struggling with this same issue now for our vacation house and am leaning towards a corner fireplace for the FR. While it works for many, I do not like a TV above a FP, much preferring to have it at a lower level.

I've always hated my corner fireplace. Maybe because the room is long and narrow. I always feel like there is a competition between it and whatever I put on the wall beside it. I've resigned myself to it none-the-less though.

Foxes, that is the only corner fireplace that I have ever coveted. That entire area is wonderful! I think the placement by the doorway is fantastic. It emphasizes its function over focal point.

We have a corner fireplace and I like it. Our TV is elsewhere and I am so glad it is not over the fireplace. Instead, I have an oil painting of our daughters hanging there.

oakleyok, if we put the FP in the corner, the tv would be in the center of the wall, a lot like the photo tryingtodecorate posted, except there are windows on each side of the tv.

Beagles, I like yours, very cozy. What brand is it? We are going to replace the ventless we have now with a gas vented type.

Kiva fireplaces have been used for centuries out here in New Mexico. They're corner fireplaces made with adobe bricks. They also have very shallow mantles. Do I like them? Yes, because they do heat a room and provide a focal point while still freeing up valuable wall space for other things. The shallow mantels are a real challenge, though. But, it's always nice to have a sofa directly facing a fireplace, IMO, which can be a decorating/ traffic problem in rooms with kivas.

We have 3 kivas, in our family room, MBR and on our front portal/porch . . . and one "regular" fireplace in our living room. I do have to admit that we use the kivas much more frequently because they are more energy efficient. I'm not sure, though, if this is because of their smaller firebox area or if they just work better because they're made with solid adobe (mud) bricks.

I used to have the family room sofa parallel to the fireplace but it was tough on the traffic pattern and tv watching. I finally changed that and we do like the new layout better. It was never an option in the MBR or front portal.

In our living room, I have 2 matching sofas facing each other and perpendicular to the "regular" fireplace. I love that arrangement a lot.

So, to me, it would depend on the size of the room and what else you need in that room, such as tv, seating for a specific number of people, etc.

marti8a it is a Liberty Regency fireplace. We used the same one in the three rooms that we put gas fireplaces (we also did one wood-burning). Here is a close-up of the same fireplace in one of the other rooms:

I never had a strong feeling about them...it really depended on where and how they were placed relative to the layout and traffic pattern in the rest of the room. But when we were house shopping, DH hated them and refused every home that had one.

I have 2 fireplaces, both gas & both in the corner. I put both of them in & have a TV over one of them. I LOVE the corner location!

I am so glad to hear many like their corner fireplaces as we will have one too. The corner for us is the first part of the room you see. To solve the TV issue competing with the fireplace, we are getting one of those consoles that holds a TV inside (TV pops up). These are not inexpensive sadly. If you want to see where we are placing it, you can look at my thread entitled something like "Window seat or couch under window" and scroll down to my updated layout posted today around 7:45. Our solution seems to deal with the competing focal point debate. Perhaps it would not be a good solution for those who have their TV on constantly.
