We just ordered plantation shutters for our whole house, and we went with the ORB hinges. We have ORB knobs/pulls/door hardware, etc. and thought it would be best to keep it consistent throughout the house.

Thanks for the input, especially since the sales rep was really pushing for white hinges. I totally agree with you, Technicolor, about how good rustic black looks on white!

Really, I'm starting to think that if one wouldn't put white hinges on any nice piece of furniture (or cabinetry) in their house, why would one put them on shutters? I think it might cheapen the look, and after spending this much, that's the last thing I want.

I consider things like hinges on shutters to be completely different than cabinet/door hardware. On a plantation shutter, especially a large one, there are so many hinges used you sort of want the hinge to blend in with the shutter and not detract you from admiring the shutter. If the shutter is white in color then a white hinge makes sense, If it is a stained wood then you could go with an ORB or another metal. But the last thing I would want on a white shutter is to see specks of black or dark metal across the entire treatment. And I just ordered shutters for my front living room window and front door sidelight. The rest of my hardware (ie kitchen cabinetry, lights, door handles, etc.) is brushed or satin nickle. My kitchen faucet, powder room faucet and light fixture is polished chrome.

First, let me say I generally dislike white; in fact, I told the designer that I wish the shutters (and the interior trim of the house) could be black. But hubby gets some say and he wanted white trim in the house, and I recognize a loosing battle--so white shutters were ordered.

I think shutters and furniture are different with respect to hardware. If the shutters and trim around them are white, non-white hinges will draw your eye. But for windows, don't you really want eyes to focus through the slats/glass to the outside? With doors and furniture, contrasting hardware can be a part of the piece's charm and you want to give it attention. But hinges are not the charming element of shutters, IMO; that roll is taken up by the slats. Especially when the slats and frame are both white.

Now, if the trim around the shutters is not white, but is intended to contrast with the white shutter slats, then I would probably go with non-white hinges to give more umph to the contrasting frame element.

Are they being mounted to white trim? If so, so little of the hinges show I would go with white.

If they are like mine, a dark color would look like catterpillars climbing up the wall.
