cooktop cover

Has anyone any experience with this cooktop cover (see link) or something similar to it? I don't have the funds (or a willing husband) to redo my kitchen down to studs to move my cooktop from the island to the wall but I'd still like to find a way to have more usable space on my island when the cooktop is not in use.

I hope it's not as cheesy or flimsy as the burner covers of years past, the metal ones with the flowers painted on them.

Here is a link that might be useful: cooktop cover

I can understand what it's like to need more usable space. Counter space is at a premium in my home. Although I do not have a cooktop, (I have a standard range) I do have an idea. It was my step-father's actually. He seems to have an idea for everything. When he doesn't my mom does.
Any way, the idea- we actually took a piece of countertop and rigged it up with a framework and some felt tabs to set on top of the stove for extra space. It works great. My piece was actually the left over part of my counter top from cutting out the sink hole. You could adapt this by putting tile on a piece of plywood or even a nice piece of butcher block style wood on framework of 2x2's to cover your cooktop. Just make sure you give yourself plenty of clearance. You can cover the wood with almost anything that will take some abuse. A little imagination would be all it takes. Good luck, I hope this helps.

Thanks, peanutmom. Now that you suggest that, I remember a neighbor doing something similar. They had tile counters and found a piece of formica that coordinated. We're doing granite counters so there's no way I could use a piece of left-over granite (I'd really have to build up my muscles!). But maybe a piece of butcher block will work. I'll ask my dad - he likes to play with wood - and see what he thinks.

That said, being able to buy something ready to go is attractive (I wouldn't have to wait as long!) so I'd still like to hear if anyone knows this item.

I was going to suggest something similar - my neighbor has Corian CTs and they saved the sink cut out and just use that over the burners. I am not sure if they put felt on the bottom, but it works really well!

Do you have a local craft market? We have a weekend market here and there's a guy who makes beautiful cutting boards in all sizes. We picked up one to cover our cooktop and have loved it. He does flat boards and cooktop covers shaped like the one in your ad, but made of various types of wood. he's been there for years. Maybe there's someone like that at your market??

We use two Boos cutting boards when we are entertaining. We do have an induction cooktop, so fire isn't an issue. I would worry about a wood cutting board over a gas/electric range top....

Good idea, faleash! I'll look into hiring a local craftsman.

nightowlrn, yes, fire would be a concern but I plan on having the cover extend over the knobs as well. It would be difficult to turn the knobs on with them covered and I wouldn't cover it if the burners will still warm from use.

I had to google Boos cutting boards. Never heard of them, so glad you mentioned them. Thanks!
