Odd Walls

Hello,

For starters, my house was built in 1926 in Indianapolis, IN. I've been stripping bad wallpaper from a room and, of course, i had to knock a hole in the wall. I'm curious if someone can tell me if the way that the walls in my house are constructed is common of 1920's construction.

I have no idea of the materials used, but the makeup of my walls from inside to out is as follows:

1. Studs

2. Wood Lathe

3. Backerboard?? it's 1/2" thick, grey, and coarse. Formed like drywall in appx. 3'X4' squares.

4. Over these squares is some sort of mudding? it looks like it was applied like plaster. It's about 1/2" thick, grey, and seems like concrete with black hairs mixed with it.

5. On top of that is a very thin spread of bright white chalk-like material.

6. and then about 10 layers of paint.

I had to knock out a square of the Mudding listed in point #4 because it looks like it bowed out from the wall when it dried after application. Nothing looks like it has been remodeled since construction in 1926, so if someone can shed some light on this type of wall construction, i would be very grateful.

Regards

Joe
