Dining Area Needs Direction....WWGWD?

This is my little dining area that needs something. I've decided that my table I love is to big and rectangle for the small space and a round pedestal table would probably be a better option. To bad I gave one away a couple years back when I got this table.

I don't know if I want a painted table with wood chairs or another all wood set. If I went painted what color? I will probably change out the rug but not sure.

Kitchen, dining and living room are open to each other, so I want somewhat cohesive feeling but not to matchy. (As I did with current rugs)

I'm up for suggestions on table, chairs, chandelier, rug, and maybe curtains. Red is my accent color through most of the house and it's sometimes a tough color to incorporate.

I'd appreciate any guidance.

Here's a shot of the adjoining kitchen we remodeled about a year ago

I don't have an updated picture of the LR but this will work for a general idea of furniture.

    Here's a link to a PB table -- just for ideas .....

Perhaps this kind of table with woven armchairs? Just a thought?

Check out this top blog entry from Cote de Texas about woven chairs from Cost Plus World Market ..... might work around a table in your kitchen -- and make a nice seating area ....

I agree that a round table would look much better and I like the idea of woven chairs but more minimal looking.
I think if you're going to use red, you should use it as an accent. The drapes aren't working for me as the eye naturally goes to color and you miss all the beauty of your gorgeous kitchen etc. Would you consider vertical woven blinds? They're very good looking and add texture. They come in wide widths for atrium doors and gliders. I'd use the red accents in a few pieces around the room.

Too bad you couldn't turn the table so that the longer sides were parallel to the window, and get a pair of fun fabric chairs for either end of the table, one that would sit in the open area between the cabinets where you now have the bench and baskets. Obviously you would turn the rug as well.

I agree about losing the red drapes. Since you have woven blinds on the kitchen window, repeating it in the dining area would pull it together a little better. Although you said you used red as an accent in your home, from the pictures, it seems like there is very little of it in this space, so the large area of red in the drapes seems out of proportion to the amount of red elsewhere. Maybe it's somewhere else not shown in the pictures.

I can't quite tell from my monitor, but it looks like above the bench is area for hanging coats? That space looks empty, like it needs something. If you can't hang artwork there, how about some sort of painted or stenciled design?

    BTW, really like your kitchen.

Thank your for all the insight so far. I agree woven blinds would look nicer but they wouldn't function well. We have to close the drapes daily due to the west sun and that being a busy road and people gawk in our house. The woven blind over the kitchen doesn't truly block the sun which interferes with tv watching. It would take two blinds to cover the 72" wide by 72" tall window. Since DH and I are a bit OCD having two blinds to raise and close perfectly would drive us bonkers. LOL

I know the red isn't probably the best choice for curtains but we didn't know what direction to go. DH fears to much beige as it's rental like and that's what he knew growing up. I realize I don't have much red other than the curtains and throw pillows on the bench. I've been hesitant to introduce to much color without a direction.

Above the bench is used for hanging coats (mostly winter time). We were not blessed with a coat closet or mudroom so that area does double duty. It's the door used by us and friends 95% of the time.

Is there a way to add art and keep the coat racks? I did recently paint them red but not sure I love them since there isn't much elsewhere. Although I love the color and idea of them being red.

I'll try turning the table but not sure there would be enough room to pass through. Our aging partially blind dog probably won't thank me. Haha.

I really like the idea of painted table and wood tone chairs. But not sure what color. I think cabinet color would be to much. White might fight the creamy cabinet color. And then I get stuck on color. I don't want it to lean to country or cottage.

Again thanks for the input and suggestions. I'm open for more after examining some of my thoughts. :-)

I'm just trying to figure out what WWGWD means.
Is it What Would George Washington Do?

I think it means " what would garden webbers do " .

Ah, that makes sense. Sometimes I'm just a little slow ;)

Haha! Definitely what would garden webbers do?

When I said woven blinds, I meant vertical woven blinds. They're super easy to open and really add a lot to a room. We have them and they do block the sun. Here is the site.

Hmmm. Not sure about the vertical blinds. Kinda seem motel-ish to me. But I haven't looked at them in years.

I'm just stuck on this area. Local furniture store only had 1 round table and it was a granite/marble look.

Can I hang some art like this under the coat hooks or would be be to much? Should I paint that area a different color?

How much space would be needed to comfortable get in the chair in the alcove? I hope to try to turn it all sideways tonight.
