What happened to green sofas???

A few years ago, sage green seemed to be the big color in sofa fabrics. Soft, pretty, not too dark, not too light. Of course, I wasn't shopping for sofas *then*.

Now I find all the sofas are various shades of brown, tan, greyish... Neutral. Colorless. Nice, I guess, but not what I'm looking for. There are a few very dark greens - too dark, and a few light yellow-ish greens - striking, but not really practical, I think, especially when you have two cats who enjoy shedding and tossing up the occasional hairball.

I've looked in Room & Board, Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Ethan Allen, Macy's, and a few other places. I like the Doss fabric in Room & Board - it's a microfiber with a twill-like diagonal stripe in it - but the colors aren't doing anything for me. I was excited to find a couple of stores on the web selling sofas in that fabric with a couple of choices of green (Macy's being one of them), but I emailed R&B and they said those colors were discontinued. How can they be discontinued if Macy's is selling them??? Of course I like the R&B sofa better than the Macy's sofa - the Macy's one is too deep for my short legs.

Frustration.

I saw a really pretty green on a Stickley sofa. It was darker than sage, but it looked like it would hide cat hair well. :-) Good luck with your search!

I think you're going to have to look in CL.

I like to wear green. For years and years the darned clothes manufacturers didn't put out any green at all. I had to go to thrift stores for my green. Well, now you're discovering the same thing in sofas.

If you want brand new, one way is to find a used sofa you want that is built and have it reupholstered, or do it yourself. Good luck!

Many furniture stores have sofa's you can order with a large selection of upholstery fabrics. I got a Thomasville sofa a couple of years ago and chose a medium soft green for the fabric. Here's a link to a good discussion last month about green sofas.

I have a Flexsteel green (sectional) couch I purchased last year. There was very little green upholstery on the sales floors of the various furniture stores I visited but most midline-and-better upholstered furniture can be ordered in a selection of fabrics; there were many different greens in Flexsteel's selection. I must have brought home twenty or so green swatches to coordinate with our area rug. Desperately wanted a deep green velvety fabric but for practicality chose a medium mossy-sagey green (and had the included toss pillows made in the deep green velvet LOL).

"How can they be discontinued if Macy's is selling them???"

Because the company making furniture under R&B's label is probably also making furniture under several other labels for other stores, and while R&B may have discontinued THEIR use of that particular fabric it's still being used in products made for other stores. I can't remember who makes R&B's upholstery but for example Mitchell Gold makes most of the upholstered furniture for Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn so sometimes there is crossover in fabrics or one store will discontinue a fabric but it's still available under a different brand name elsewhere.

Mimi, johnmari - thank you for your comments, but I've been looking at the fabric selections in these stores! They don't even have green anymore in their custom fabric selections! I didn't expect to be able to just order the stock fabric off the floor, but I did expect a better choice of colors in the custom fabrics.

For example, here are the microfiber selections from Room & Board:

Doss comes in off-white, light gray, light tan, blue-ish gray, mustard yellow, dark brown, and this very neutral grayish/tannish color that doesn't go with any color carpeting I can imagine.

Deal fabric comes in off-white, light gray, medium brown, dark brown, and black.

Desmond comes off-white, light gray, tan, dark brown, charcoal, and for color, lilac, dark green, and ruby.

Even if I get away from the microfibers, there's very little selections - a few prints, a few velvets (which I can tell you from experience do not go well with cat hair), and one leather.

Should'a redecorated a few years ago when I actually liked what was in the stores.

I bought my sage green sofa 3 years ago for my family room at Domain's. Unfortunately, I think they are out of business now... It is extremely difficult to find furniture and colors that aren't following the current trends. Buying a good sofa used and having it reupholstered is an option...

We purchased a Clayton Marcus sectional and they have at least 700-800 fabric choices. I did see quite a few in various shades of green. We chose a smoky navy blue, which was very hard to find...you think green is hard to find, try finding blue LOL.

I would keep looking. Try Flexsteel, Clayton Marcus, Ethan Allen, Thomasville. Best of luck and know that your green is out there somewhere.

Have you tried an independent furniture store? One with just one or two locations?

I've had the best luck with upholstered furniture with the independent stores. My style is definitely not what's in style these days, and the chain stores don't cater to my taste at all. The independent stores tend to carry lines of furniture that can be upholstered with multiple fabrics and will even arrange for upholstery with a fabric of your choosing, if what the manufacturer offers isn't to your tastes. Many of them have interior designers on staff, who might be able to find a fabric that you like.

Where do you live? I'm just so. of Chicago; went furniture shopping last few weeks and saw a LOT of sage green sofas. I guess the midwest is always behind in trends.

Independent furniture stores??? There *is* such a thing??? I mean, the only independents I've spotted are the real cheapie hole-in-the-wall stores where the quality seems kind of spotty.

Can anyone recommend some furniture stores in NYC? (I'm in Queens, but Manhattan is good, as are the other boroughs.)

Crate and Barrel still has at least one green sofa available...didn't look further...

actually...quite a few of C&B's sofas are available in shades of green...custom colors to be sure, but green.

If you're looking at Ethan Allen, take a look at Thomasville. If you want to go a little higher, consider Drexel Heritage.

I used to have a forrest green sofa, bought it in the 90s when green became popular.

When we went sofa shopping a few months ago, I couldn't believe all the blasted neutral colors! I love the red sofa I bought, but I think it's the only sofa that actually had color. lol

The big trend right now is neutral. I hate it. But your good furniture stores have designers who can help you with fabric. But expect to pay more for it.

charlikin ~ We live about 70 miles north of NYC in southern Dutchess County. We did alot of research prior to purchasing and decided on Lauter's Furniture, which is located in Lehigh Valley, PA. They're an independent brink and mortar store, in business for over 100 years, and they deliver as far north as Poughkeepsie, NY. The sales help is knowledgeable and extremely pleasant to deal with, their prices are extremely competitive and their service is outstanding. If you're either willing to take a drive out there or know what you want and are willing to buy through them over the phone, they're great.
    I've supplied a link.

charlikin, I don't know any stores in NYC. But you can try googling the name of a good furniture manufacturer and find out stores in your area that carry that line. Look for an independent store and check them out on line.

Or ask people who've lived in the area for a while. I found a great store, family owned and operated, where I bought a sofa and some chairs that are wonderfully comfortable, based on the recommendations of friends who lived in the area for generations. They had hundreds and hundreds of fabric swatches to look at, not the 10 or 20 you get in a department store.

I live in Westchester County and work in NYC. I know you said you went to Crate and Barrel but did you try looking at furniture made by Lee Industries? C&B actually carries Lee furniture but you have to special order it. Lee Industries is excellent quality and costs just as much as Pottery barn but is 100x the quality. If you go to the C&B on 58th, they carry the Lee Industries line. Ask to see the fabrics and you may find one you like - they have a large selection. Additionally, every year C&B has a 25% off sale but I think its in Oct.

When I wanted a green couch, I had my old couch reupholstered in exactly the sage green fabric I wanted....less money than buying a new couch.

I have a green chenille sofa in my family room and didn't realize they were out of style, but for the new sofa I'm getting for my living room I'm considering one in a lovely green linen. I'm planning on purchasing it from Sofa Craft, which makes custom sofas and chairs locally (available in sinuous spring or 8-way hand tied frames) at a much lower cost than RH and Crate and Barrel.

The sofas are extremely comfortable and they have a huge fabric selection. When looking through their selection for a fabric for my slipcovers, I saw many greens available in linen, cotton and microfiber. I think I remember from visiting their website that they offer to send fabric samples for those ordering outside California.

I was quoted approximately $1450 for a English rolled-arm couch (like Restoration Hardware's) with an 8-way hand-tied frame and slipcovered in linen (Level 7 fabric), or $1350 for upholstered in linen. If you want to purchase locally, maybe you have a similar manufacturer nearby.
