And now for something totally different!

Did I mention that I am learning to weave? This is something I have wanted to do for years and finally decided to mark it off my "bucket list."

My first woven scarf - yarns provided by the Cricket loom kit made in the USA by Schacht. A wonderful loom to get started weaving! Very easy to use, warping takes only an hour or less, not days. Lots of fun to do! Great for children too! Hope my edges will improve with practice.

Second scarf - made for me, using sock yarn called Happy Feet; very soft, not too thick, warm and cozy. I think I am improving!

Project now on the Cricket - scarf for my mom; tricky yarns, beautiful, but not easy to work with; I had my doubts about this one, but I think it will be pretty! You learn from each project you weave....I hope!

Some of your wonky edges, etc. are less visible when you wet finish (wash, dry flat and block if needed) your woven projects. Oh.....and did I mention how fast it is too weave? Really quick! I can warp, weave, and finish a scarf in about 6-8 hours, or over two to three weaving sessions in the evening after work and supper! Much faster than knitting from what I am told - I do not knit myself.

Now I'm just biding my time and saving my money until I can get a bigger Schacht Flip loom so I can weave placemats and kitchen towels, wider shawls, etc.

Am I having fun yet? You bet!

Pretty!! How wide is this loom?
I like the scarf you are keeping - you deserve to keep it:)
Look at the link below - a friend just sent it to me - 5 mins ago.

We are looking for headliner fabric (specific weave and color) for a 1951 Porsche he is restoring. I haven't had a chance to look at this site much, but it looks so cool.

The weaving width of the Cricket is about 10" - just big enough for scarves, bags, table runners, etc. I prefer most of my scarves in the 5" to 7" width.

That looks like a really fun and creative activity. If you're not careful, you may get addicted to weaving as well as quilting and then what will you do? LOL

Nice work, I think you are getting better. I always thought weaving would be a relaxing hobby. Now we expect scarves at the retreat next year.

Teresa, those all look great! And it does indeed look like you're getting better with each project!

I think Beverly's selling you short. I think we should each get 6 matching placemats and a table runner to boot!! LOL just kidding... enjoy your fun!

glad to see someone else is weaving.
Are there any forums or posts that are particular to weaving? I always have questions and ideas I'd like to bounce off somone else.
Have you tried rayon chenille for scarves? I'm hooked on them, they are so luscious!
I have a floor loom--schacht might wolf 8 harness and plan to do some rug weaving and tapestry.

Your scarves are beautiful! I love the second one, in blue and yellow.

Plantknitter, there are weaving forums (several) on the Ravelry.com web site. There is one for the Cricket, one for rigid heddle looms and probably other weaving groups.
I've added a link to the rigid heddle group.

    Ravelry is a great community!

Plantknitter--luscious and expensive! I got some Touch Me Due yarn (HAD to have it) that I'm going to try to knit. We'll see. I hear it 'worms' with some knitting stitches and I'm sure it's better woven. My mother was as jealous over that yarn as I've ever seen her over anything-ordinarily she's quite tranquil and genteel. She marched back to her room and right back out with a pattern book that had a Touch Me scarf earmarked. There was really an edge to her voice, like I'd gotten the last Touch Me Due on earth, and broken in line in front of her to do it. I was delighted, of course. ;)

That looks like fun and I can see the improvments with each scarf. Congraulations on spreading your wings. How wide can you weave with this loom? Are you able to join the strips to make larger projects?
    Interesting. TFS. Jayne

Now this is a nice hobby to have.... make a quilt to snuggle in and add the matchng scarf to wear at the same time!!

The Cricket is not very wide, maybe a 9-inch weaving area, but that is big enough to weave a scarf or purse. I also made some eyeglass cases from smaller pieces I wove. Last year I made about 7 scarves, 6 for Christmas gifts.

This is a good loom to learn on and it is not terribly expensive - about $140 now - and it is easily portable. There are other rigid heddle looms on the market - some wider and quite a bit more expensive. You could hand join panels to make a baby blanket or a throw.

That is sooooo neat! I would also love to try something like that, but time is always my problem. So many things to do and try and not enough time to do them all. I really need to win the lottery so I can quit work and "play" all the time!

    Love the scarfs!
