guest room query

For those of you with a guest room, do you keep the closet empty? My guest room is used by friends and family who come generally for 1 or 2 nights at a time, so I use the bedroom closet for some overflow items (extra comforters and the like). There is still plenty of room for my guests to hang stuff, if they choose. I've noticed when staying with friends recently that they keep their guest room closet completely empty, even though it seems they could use the storage space.

No, our guest closets are not empty because all the closets are on the small side . When guests are coming I make sure there is hanging space and a few hangers. If they are staying more than just a few days, I also empty a drawer or two.

Yes, ours is completely empty but we don't need the storage. In our old home, DH kept his work clothes in the closet since he showered in the guest bath. I had one of those portable hanging racks with cubbies for guests. how about something like that? Or do you have room for an armoire? They are generally available pretty cheap on craigslist these days.

My guest room closet is pretty full. It's a fairly big walk in so I have a portable hanging rack in the middle for guests as well as two empty drawers and luggage stands. There are also empty drawers in that bathroom.

I stuck gramma's cedar chest in the guest closet as it's the only place I could put it. Other than that, it's empty for guests. But I've stayed in homes where there was less room and I made do with the space they gave me....not a problem....I was always thankful for their willingness to share their home with us....

My goal is to empty out our guest room closet of the photo boxes, vases, out-of-season décor, pictures we haven't hung up, etc.! It's shocking! As it is, I have an over-door hook for them to hang things up. When I am a guest, I feel like I'm intruding if there is stuff in the closet other than extra linens for the household or books.

My kid's bedrooms are the guest rooms now that they are grown and gone.
The guest room drawers are empty, save for the guest towels, guest robe and other guest amenities.
The guest room closet is empty.

    My reasoning is two-fold:
    1) I am more comfortable NOT seeing the owner's stuff when I use their spaces. So I figure others may feel the same.
    2) If I have so much stuff that I NEED to use that space, I need to purge stuff.

Our guest room closet is really big, but it's not a walk in. It has extra linens for the guest bed and the sofa bed in the playroom. There's a dresser in one side that's empty except for one drawer. Half of the hanging space is free for guest clothes. The other half has things like my prom dresses, DH's letterman's jacket and seldom worn outerwear. There's also a luggage rack for a guest's suitcase in there. We don't have overnight guests very often, and they don't stay for very long, so it's plenty of space for them.

I suppose I could empty it out completely, but we're the ones who live here day in day out, and I'd rather not have my other closets jam packed when I have a perfectly good closet available in the guest room.

Thanks to everyone for answering! I'm engaged in decluttering/reorganizing this summer and was thinking of working on the guest room closet next. I think I'll try and get the personal stuff out but I think I'm comfortable with leaving extra bedding in there.
