recessed light placement - help please

My cabinets went in today (they are beautiful - that's another story). With the cabinets now in, the rececessed can lights the electrician had placed are all off center.. the one over the sink is a few inches off center as is the cooktop one, and the one over the doorway into the dining room. There are a few that look like they will be right to the edge when the crown moulding goes in tomorrow, on one side the upper cabinets are deeper than the opposite side, so on one side the lights are about 6 inches from the cabinets, the other side 2 inches. When there was no ceiling and no cabinets, the electrician (who had drawings to refer to) asked me what I thought, it looked okay to me (but what do I know??). The general contractor came in and then put up the new ceiling and he didn't say anything about the lights, but today now that the cabinets went in, they are just so obviously off! My husband is furious and I feel responsible but shouldn't the electrician and the general contractor have noticed where these lights would be when the cabinets went in or is it my responsible to measure and decide where I wanted them.... so sad right now! Probably nothing can be done without removing the ceiling and starting all over... So I guess my question is should the lights be centered and should the guys I am paying have noticed that they weren't?

Who did the light design? Your KD? S/he should have incorporated the lighting design with the cabinets in the final cabinet layout. If s/he messed up, it's his/her responsibility. However, if you did the lighting design/plan and the electrician & GC followed your plans, then I'm afraid you're responsible. How were they to know where the lights would fall in regards to cabinets if someone didn't tell them or show them the design?

If they saw the plan with the cabinet layout, then it would have been nice if one of them had pointed out the issues, but you can't always count on that.

We were lucky, we had all our lights, electrical, etc. on one plan done by our KD. But our electrician obviously studied the plans b/c he made some suggestions for improvement...some we took, some we didn't...we were grateful for his advice. (The plumber, though, was another story...and not a good one!)

I guess I should have gotten a KD. The cabinet rep from Riceland designed the kitchen layout including appliances but that's it. I have learned the hard way you really can't assume things... since my GC builds big beautiful homes I thought he would "take care" of things like this but I should have realized he needs drawings to follow! The electrician that laid out the lights, I was told was their "residential guy" and does kitchens all the time but again, probably following drawings. Oh well, meeting with the GC and electrician this morning (husband is happily off to work), maybe there is something that can be done. The best solution we came up with last night is to place a second can at the cooktop almost next to the one that is there, these will then be centered on the hood and in our opinion look like they are showcasing the range and hood. We also want them to remove and plug in the hole in the ceiling at the dining room opening. I think this would solve all the problems. Hopefully they are willing to work with us... I have my fingers crossed... other than that, things are looking so good here!
