My Whimsical Kitchen

I post occasionally and love reading this site. We recently finished the kitchen (only needs a little something on the valance) and thought I would post it. It isn't anything fancy but we are quite happy and comfortable with it.

A little background... the kitchen was gutted and remodeled in 1991/92. I still love my oak cabinets but it was time to replace the counters and the floor. While we were at it, we tore down the wallpaper and painted. By the time we were done with it, the only things original to the kitchen are the cabinets and the backsplash. Here are some picts.

Your granite is gorgeous!!!! I just love the green walls with the chocolate brown floors! Thanks for sharing!!!!

Great job - love the granite & floors. I especially love the art work - I have similar pieces in my kitchen & always buy the "love to cook" calendar every year. So fun!

Very cute! That granite is delicious! What is your backsplash? I can't make the photo bigger, and I am curious of your accent tiles.

My mom loves the chefs, too. They are fun.

The backsplash is mostly textured white italian tiles with a few hand-painted ones that I got back in 92. I know that square tiles are no longer the fashion but love the backsplash as much today and when I originally picked it out 18 years ago. I cropped a picture to try to give you a better view.

Your title made me open this. I love whimsey in a kitchen :) What a fun space to work in....if you've seen mine you know I love personality in a home....you have it in droves. I can easily picture enjoying a chat and a glass or two of wine in that lovely space.

But I have to ask...what is the bowl in the butcherblock on the island? Is it for prep???? I'm intrigued!

Thanks for the comments igloochic. The "bowl" is where I put the trash. Makes it really easy to do prep and just sweep the peelings, etc, right into it. Originally, it was a white plastic set-up that I damaged by putting a hot container on it. I was able to find a stainless steel container of the right diameter and replace it with that. The island needs oiling in the worse way... I should have done that before taking the picture.

How did you find accent tiles? I've googled for them and never get quite what I'm looking for. Then I end up spending hours and hours looking through all the web pages thinking surely there must be something there but there never is. Oh, I take that back. The web site with the bee hives, I wish I could remember who that belonged to, had some really cute stuff but it wasn't what I was looking for.

Pinch me, the accent tiles were at the tile store along side the plain tiles. Sorry I can't be much more help than that as it was a long time ago that we got them. At that time, murals were few and far between. I remember seeing a few but they were too much for my kitchen at the time. I preferred doing a few accent tiles. I do remember that the accent tiles were very expensive as they were hand painted.
By the way, we did diy as much as possible such as the electrical, the plumbing, the painting and so on as possible. The counters and the floors were done by professionals. That was the case with the original kitchen as well.
Oh and I love, love, love the induction cooktop. I am less impressed by the oven as I had a Dacor before and it was much bigger inside than the present Kenmore.

    Hello!

I quite love your happy, mello kitchen, the color of the wood for the cabinets, the beautiful granite and the way you pick up the color of the floor tile is just lovely. I think it's the first brown sink I've seen in a new kitchen.

My greatest interest is that layout wise, it looks like a ranch kitchen, which is what I have. On this site I don't see many Raised Ranch/ bi-level kitchen pictures. As you can guess it's great to see such beautiful work and be inspired. My circa mid-eighties kitchen is in sad need of de-beige-ing...

So my big question: Where is your refrigerator? Hidden on the wall with the microwave?? :)

pinch me, you can find LOTS of accent tiles on ebay. I bought some for my bathroom a few years back, and they are really nice.

Just do a search for decorative ceramic tile or tile murals, and you will see a bunch.

    HAPPY EASTER, everyone! :^)

levnt, my house is a small circa 1970 bungalow. Thanks for the compliments. The fridge is past the dishwasher. There is a bank of drawers and then the fridge. I still have an almond fridge which really doesn't go with the remainder of the appliances but the space it fits in is too small to fit another fridge without some cabinetry work to be done. It isn't much to do (the light rail needs to be cut shorter) but since the fridge isn't all that old and still works, that is something we rather tackle another time.
Here is the end of the kitchen I forgot to post.

Danni, your kitchen is definitely in the modest and proud of it mode. I suspect that you have had lots of memories made by working in the kitchen. Not only that, but you have lived within your means and don't seem to have any regrets. In fact, I think that Thorvald would approve, He might stay a day or two, feeling very much at home and loving every minute.

Personally, my favorite part is the curtains. I am trying to figure out how to work some white linen and lace into my new kitchen, but I don't think it's going to work.

Great kitchen, but I almost wish I hadn't looked. Now I want a cuckoo clock in my kitchen. I had no idea I needed one, but clearly I do. Nice job!

Great job - I love your granite.

Thanks for posting the great pics of your fabulous kitchen. I love your personal touches. And your granite...!!!! I must go back to the stoneyard and look for that.

    Danni--

Thanks for answering my rude curiosity re your fridge! I actually like bisque appliances. If you ever do need to replace it the sears website offers a way to search for fridges based on demensions...

Len, thanks for the tip. The space will fit a fridge that is about 64.5 inches high and from my research, most 30" wide fridges made today are taller. The rail will have to be cut shorter to accommodate a taller fridge.

And for everyone who commented on my quirky kitchen, thank you for the compliments. I know it doesn't follow the norm in here, but I did get a lot of awesome ideas from everyone who posts on the kitchen forum. I would like to say a special thank you to Trailrunner who sent me the paint swatches from her kitchen.
