Adding recessed lighting

I have a few clueless questions...

We are planning to buy an existing house. It is 2 story built in 1990. Most of the rooms have no lighting other than the ceiling fan light kit. I want to add recessed lighting particularly to the bedroom, kitchen (currently has flourescent which we would take out) and den. These rooms are all on the first floor.

We would hire a contractor to do this? Is there anything particular we need to ask for or be concerned about? I've read here about some cans needing to be rated for being around insulation. For these first floor rooms is that something we need?

Any specific brands to use or avoid for that use?

Hire a "competent" electrician whom is capable of "surgically" preforming this installation so that the damage is minimal.

Chances are that there is no insulation.

You also have differing aesthetics to consider.

In my village, if there is insulation in a ceiling, cans must be rated and the insulation has to be 3" away from the can on all sides. Adding recessed lighting could easily rip up your ceiling if not done efficiently. Get a good electrician and one who won't tell you that you need to take out the ceiling as part of the project. We used Juno cans.

You should consider if you want recessed light anyway. I had an electrician install some in my kitchen, now I'm having him take them out. They cast ugly shadows on my cabinets because I added crown molding to the tops of the cabinets. I'm keeping them over my sink, but the others, I'm replacing with overcabinet lighting and undercabinet lighting. Keep in mind that you can't just place them where you want them. You have to work around the beams in your ceiling.
