Ventilation / ductwork problem

(First -- I'm a long-time lurker -- love the info here. So many of you know so much!)

We are building a new, rustic house on a lake. Our house design has a little "bump out" that holds the kitchen. After discarding the idea of an island we are building a peninsula off the kitchen. Here's the problem: while a downdraft ventilation system would be easy to install, my understanding is that they are not great. We're intending to put in a decent gas range or cooktop (Wolf/Viking style).

Overhead ventilation is the best, but we have a flush beam we cannot go through. In order to have an overhead vent we'll also have to have some surface-mounted ductwork. My problem is this: while I can "imagine" what we need, I cannot find any pictures on the web of "decorative ductwork".

My wife won't budge until she can see some examples. This will have to travel over about 5' of ceiling at a height of 8' so best would be flat -- but could be different, too. It needs to fit with the rustic decor in some way, or at least look good.

Does anyone have any pictures of such? Have you done this? Am I just a crazy Canuck?
