please help select granite countertop

hi everyone,

i've had a hard time deciding to choose a granite top that would look good with this kitchen cabinets.

Right now I'm deciding between Blue Pearl or Black Galaxy, but I'm not sure.

I also want to remove the wallpaper and repaint the kitchen too, but that's another story.

Thank you very much for your input.

Are your cabinets white or grey? I'm having trouble distinguishing based on the photo.

My immediate instinct is to say lighter. You need
light in that room. The flourescent light you have is
giving off a blue/gray cast. It could be my monitor.

A light color granite. perhaps cream, light beige, white,
light gray or light brown. If you can take the wallpaper
down and paint you will be amazed at the change.
If you are indeed taking the paper down then going with
a darker granite might be okay.

Is that wood trim on the cab? A cherry color, Red or
dark brown? I can not see it. You could even find a
granite to bring out that color. You have the good
fortune to have some curvy lines in that kitchen
whatever granite you do choose will look amazing
in the kitchen. I would stick with a 1/2 bullnose edge
to keep it modern or even a chunky square look.

Here are some ideas of blue/gray kitchens and the
    counters with them.

    Good luck

If expense were no object, how about a glass countertop? It would work with the lines of the space and be reflective and enticing. I also like white with the space. If you are willing to consider a product other than granite, Caesarstone has a new white color in their Color Expression 2009 called Organic White.

boxer... you kill me! WHere do you find all your incredible inspiration pics? You have a multitude of ideas for every concept. Thanks so much for posting and being such a generous help.

I also cannot tell the color of the cabinets but think that the blue pearl would be sensational.

thank you so much for everyone's comments. The pictures are inspirational.

The cabinet color is quite tricky. I would call it sky blue. The trim is wood. The current top is dark green. I think the following picture is more accurate.

    Any more suggestions and pictures?

    Thank you all :)

Can you give us a little background on the kitchen and house, and what your goals are? Those are some unique cabs, and kind of a quirky layout.

Yellow River comes to mind. One on the lighter side with some blue running through it. It also has brownish/caramel tones in it which would incorporate the wood trim. Someone on here awhile back had a gorgeous piece of it in their kitchen.

If you are keeping the cabinets as they are then I'd suggest putting in a wooden countertop with inset honed slate or soapstone work areas.

It would be nice to see a wooden floor in there that was the same hue as the pulls on the cabinetry, with a countertop that was a darker wood in the same tonal range as the stone insets.

Bring home a sample tile of Blue Pearl to see how the different shades of blue look with your cabinets. Labrador Antique is a chocolate granite with blue "eyes". It's beautiful!! It's expensive. Some slabs aren't as pretty or rich looking and full of blue eyes as others tho.

By the looks of these pictures, it appears that this is a house that you're buying, and have not moved into yet. I am going suggest something different.

Don't do anything. Move into the kitchen and see how it works for you. The set up, as Morton said above, is quirky. There doesn't seem to be much functional work space, and the appliances look a wee bit older. I would not plunk down thousands of bucks on granite before I found out truly how functional the appliances are, and if I could work within that kitchen set-up. I say this out of experience. Every house we have purchased (only 3) has had a major unplanned expense soon after moving in -- even though each was professionally inspected.

Even if the arrangement of the kitchen works for you, the cabinets are very dated -- I'm guessing somewhere between 80 - 85? If you're planning on staying in the house, sooner or later I'm guessing you'll want to switch out those cabs. If you're planning on selling in 5- 10 years, ditto, for sales appeal. I would save the big bucks on granite, and if you have to have a new counter, I would go with one of the new HD Laminates until the money is available for a redo. IMHO, that is.

    Rjr220,
Wow, that is a good idea. To live with it for a while
    and see.

Vtph, You may decide to rip out the entire kitchen
and do something all your own. Or you might love it the
    way it is.

Thanks Remodelfla, A compliment from you is always
    nice to get.
I love looking at pictures so when I see someone needing
a pic I can find one or use one of my favorites.
In fact here is Yellow River. You have such wonderful
    ideas.

And someone said Blue Eyes. This is a lovely granite but
would it be too much blue?

Vt - Congrats on your new purchase or what appears to be

Totally agree w/rjr - This kit is funky & quirky - I wouldn't spend a dime until you are in it and understand the space/function (or lack thereof) for awhile - appliances are costly & those look like they may not have the function a working kit needs. The DW looks like a small size?
a big investment in granite is not going to help this kit - blue pearl will fight all the other blues and dated elements in the space
a few less costly things come to mind that I think would help
1- getting rid of the popcorn ceiling - that will be labor intensive but worth it
2- better lighting! - the fluorescent fixture is screaming dated, as is the wood trim on the cabs
    3. I'd paint the wood trim the same color as the cabs - take a door to your paint shop & ask them to match the color of cabs -remove door, sand, use a stain killer (zinsser makes a good one), and paint with a high quality scrubbable paint - you could even use BM floor paint which has expoxy so it will hold up -
That would make a HUGE difference - the wood totally fades into the cabs
    4. Get rid of WP and paint a nice quiet light color -
    5. The vinyl tile is also not adding anything - removal of that & even new peel/stick tile would have a much better appeal

All in if you are willing to do the labor I would venture to say you could do all the above for a few hundred dollars which would have a far better impact than thousands spent on granite.

Then after you lived in the space & recovered from purchasing a new home you can be better suited to make decisions about the space, elements etc... - I see a nice sunny room adjacent to the kitchen - I'm typically not a fan of knocking down walls - but this space seems suited to do so.

    good luck

Can anyone tell me what granite the 3rd and 4th pics on boxerpups' post is? It is labeled as "Blue eyes" but that is definitely not blue eyes. I really like it!
