I've used cotton batting and I've also used a towel, they both worked. For the top, you can buy that silver material if you like that, at Joann's or any big fabric store. I usually use muslin as I like to change it once it's stained or scorched.

You could use some 100% cotton batting,wool blankets from the thrift store,and like flamingo I use muslin for the cover.I just make new covers for it whenever the need arises,and if the old one isn't torn I just leave it on there and cover over it.

I just redid mine..I used an old towel for the padding and muslin for the cover because that is what I had...any good cotton would do...If you have the option then yes the silver fabric would work...I didn't have that option...without ordering it and I was ready to do mine and didn't want to wait to order it...and it wasn't available locally in my little town...

I saw that a silver sillicone-coated full-size pad is $10 via Amazon.com Prime. I could cut that down, I suppose, though I was thinking of making the padding thicker than most pads are.

I hadn't thought of towels--I probably could sacrifice a couple of them. They're getting threadbare around the edges.

Not sure I can find wool blankets at the thrift store, but that's not a bad idea, to stop in and see what's available.

I might have a yard of fabric I could use for the cover, though, and w/ the towels, that'd make it a zero-expense project.

I have been eying my ironing cover for some time. I have had cotton batting for a long time and it's beggining to look worn. I will use some of the suggestions here. Thanks!

If you have a military surplus store near you check there for wool blankets.

Well, I decided to go for zero expenditure, and I used two towels plus a piece of poly felt. And I had some printed broadcloth that I used for a cover. It came out pretty well!
