My backsplash is creamy white handmade tile and light grout. While I have a powerful hood, I nevertheless find it an extra chore to keep the grout behind the range looking clean. Per the advice of Bill Vincent on this Forum, I occasionally take a toothbrush and Oxyclean paste to the grout lines behind the range that look dirty. While it's not a really difficult job, it's a chore I could have done without. I love my granite countertops, and if I were doing my kitchen again, I'd put a slab of my granite behind the range too, with tile backsplash everywhere else. It's a lovely look, and removes the whole grout-cleaning issue. I particularly admire Daki's kitchen on the FKB who did that, and I'll link it below. Though my kitchen wouldn't be as dramatic or as large as Daki's, and I wouldn't border the slab with wood like Daki's, I would still do the slab behind the range.

I have 5 y.o. rustic tile with fairly large grout lines in a eurosplash, counter to ceiling tile behind the range and the sink.

When it was installed I sealed the grout (glazed tile doesn't seal). There has been 0 problems.

If you saute a lot or brown things in skillets there will be grease spatter behind the range but what I notice most is tomato-sauce spatter from either simmering or mixing pasta. That wipes right off. The grease wipes off with some windex on a miracle cloth. It wipes off the sealed grout as well.

I feel tile is much lower maintenance in that area than stainless and equally durable unless you have the back burner of a Blue Star scorching the wall (which would yellow the grout but should wipe off the tile).
