modern patchwork pillow

I would like to make some throw pillows based loosely on this modern patchwork style by Susan Hill.

I have basic sewing skills, a simple machine, and a few great upholstery remnants (not too heavy).

I am trying to figure out the best way to make the face of the pillow. My thinking is that I should use one base fabric (say, the white) and then layer the other fabrics on top. The other fabrics would be stitched to the white fabric AND to any adjacent colored fabric. My sense is that this would make the inside of the pillow smooth and easier to slide over a pillow. The pillow might also have greater structural integrity because the foundation white fabric would stop the pieced together pieces from getting pulled apart. Does this make sense? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated by this newbie. Thanks.
