Help me accessorize---pics

We recently redid the our LR/DR/Foyer/ to go along with the remodeled kitchen we did last year. I need help with some more finishing touches. Overall, I am happy with it, but one mistake was getting all espresso tables/media center--too matchy I know, but I didnt really realize it until they were all in place and we needed things to be pretty much done for out of town family/friends coming in for DS's wedding.

Hope my link will work....I am just copying/pasting url from Photobucket library. Sorry for duplicate pics and that they are probably not in order...I'm a techno idiot.

Thanks for any/all suggestions....be brutal...I can take it!

I could use a little bit more information about things like how much stuff you like to have around, and does it always look like this or is it tidied up for the photos?

My general first take is that it looks good and makes a nice overall impression but that it looks a bit staged and impersonal overall. My personal bias is toward rooms that are technically not quite right or correct and have things that are a little off or imperfect. Even if you don't want to have lots of accessories, I think it would be a little more natural to loosen up on the overall "coordination" of it all. My bias again is for lots of stuff (70 candlesticks on one chest in my old house, for example), so I may be coming from a different viewpoint. If I help a client who is a minimalist try to accessorize, I try to get to the root of something "personal" for the objects.

Thanks Pal. I forgot to say that I did have a tall plant on the DR side of the sofa, but it died last week. The area rug in the foyer is a cheapy washable rug we got because of our sickly cat, who we had to put down a week before the wedding. Yes, that is how I am feeling too--impersonal and staged. I do not like a lot of clutter (although the coffee table usually does have newspapers, etc. on it). I don't like how the coffee table kind of blends into the sofa--but not sure what to do about that. Also need a lamp for the end table--found one on the internet, but now cannot find it anymore. Here is one I was considering. The BM colors are: LR--London Fog with accent wall of Sandy Brown, DR-- Plymouth Rock, Foyer--Lighthouse Landing...basically gray, gold, and rust accents. Thanks again!

it looks like you have a few rust/orange accents - the DR light, the pic frame, the throw, the pic above the couch, but there really isn't a commitment to it. The other thing for me that is lacking is a variety of textures.

I like the lamp that you posted - it has some of the rust/orange in it and would help to lighten up the space. One thing to look at is replacing the pillows on the couch and get some that are textured (almost 3-dimensional - I have some pillows that have petals on them that actually come away from the pillows and others that are pleated) with the rust and one of the rug colours in it. Try BB&B or Home Sense.

In the DR try to bring some of the dark colour in it from the LR. How about a dark woven basket or a copper bowl for the table on top of a runner that again has the rust colour and one of the rug colours in it. Copper accents might actually be rather pretty in these rooms.

A large vase for the buffet to bring some presence and to help the mirror being anchored. The candlesticks are for me, a little small. I see you have a runner on the buffet but it appears a little uninteresting.

The rug in front of the door, without knowing where that hallway actually leads and what it looks like is harder to make a suggestion on.

Can I make one suggestion and that is to put the area rug further under the chair and couch? It looks like it is trying to go somewhere but I don't know where.

I am minimalistic when it comes to accents so when I chose I always choose something with some texture, or an interesting shape, or interesting colours in it.

Raid other rooms and any entertaining stuff that you might have stored in cabinets. Are there some favourite bowls or vases that you already have tucked away that you could use. I find that through the years we tend to gravitate to favourite colours or shapes even though they might not be "trendy". It doesn't matter.

Thanks bl---yes, I meant to mention also that I need colorful pillows but just havent found any I like yet. This color scheme is totally new for me...I used to have an almost cerulean blue carpet in the LR/DR..with taupe sofa/chairs with art that had lots of blue in it.

The hallway leads to the kitchen with a PR off of it.

The runner on the buffet hides water damage. I kept it the same color as sort of a blend in---I also dont want to overdue the rust.

I see what you mean now about the candlesticks on the buffet--you are right. I will hunt for a substantial vase and beefier candlesticks.

Thanks for your help--I really appreciate it!
