How high is your bed/mattress from the floor?
How high are your night stands from the floor?
Do you read in bed?
Do you watch TV in bed?

Without those two measurements, you cannot begin to determine the proper height of bedside lamps.

The mattress is 28" from the floor - the night stands are 30 inches high.
I bought higher ones since I read in bed. I also watch tv in bed.

The simplest way to measure is to sit up in bed with your back to the headboard as you would when reading. The bottom of the shade of your lamp should be slightly above your shoulder height.

Most people have lamps that are too short on their bedside tables. Your husband's "eye" has probably been trained by seeing so many of those too short lamps.

Perfect...I just jumped in bed and the lamp is slightly above my shoulder. I think they work. I have another 28 inch lamp and I "tested" that I thought it looked too short. For some reason the additional 4 inches looks like more.
