Most garments should be laid out on the lengthwise grain of fabric. What kind of skirt is it? Is it swishy so it might need to be on the bias? For a child or adult? Waistband? How many pattern pieces are there? Some pieces can be cut on the crosswise grain.

One thing...be very careful the newspaper ink does not come off on the fabric. Unless you are using fresh unprinted newspaper.

Sorry to take so long to respond. It is an A-line skirt, adult, no waistband. There is just one pattern piece and I cut four of them. Thanks for your help. Betsy.
