Do you have a serger? If so, you can make a lovely rolled hem if your fabric is sheer. If it's lightweight cotton, do you have a narrow hemmer? They come in various widths, from 1/8 inch up. You can buy one for almost any machine at JoAnn or Hancock; I don't know how much they cost, but I use mine all the time.

If you don't have one and can't buy one, google rolled hem for hand instructions. It's not hard, but it's time consuming and must be perfect since it's running down the front of your blouse.

The easy way is to put the edge of the ruffle on a fold of the fabric, and top-stitch along the edge to keep it flat.

Or use pre-made lace.

If I'm understanding correctly, this type of ruffle is not gathered. It's actually cut from a circle of fabric and the smaller side is straightened out and sewn down the front of the blouse. This makes the ruffled effect. So, the edge to be hemmed is not on the fold or straight edge of the fabric. Do you have the hemmer foot? It has a funny spiral shaped "thingy" you pull the fabric through and once you get started, it makes a narrow hem.

Thanks everybody for answering. You are right, Pris, it had the type of ruffle that is cut from like circles. I to not have a serger. I formerly had a Kenmore embroidery machine that the computer went bad and am going to have to get it worked on--so, bought a medium-priced Singer. Have been unable to purchase a hemmer foot for the machine--none of the Jo Ann shops in cities around here had any. I bet they are phasing out the parts stuff. Anyway, it occurred to me that this type of ruffle would be difficult to hem, so I found a Simplicity pattern that had ruffles--straight ones.. I finally had the local Sears store (certainly not like they used to be) order one for me. It said sizes 2MM, 4MM and 6MM, and I did not know what that meant and neither did the sales girl, but I am taking a chance. - Baarb
