Hemming creating bumps

Hello Community,

This is my first time here and I tried to search for a resolution to my problem but I couldn't find anything on it. Excuse me if this is a very 'newbie' question. I am working on a costume that requires large satin strips. As I try to hem the cut edges of the satin strips with my sewing machine, the fabric begins to bunch up and gather at points, forming bumps along the hem. The link below is a picture of the problem:

What am I doing wrong? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
