Interior door hardware

Do all your door handles have to match throughout your house? When we built in the late 90s, brass was "in" and our builder put it IN. We didn't oppose since it was all new to us. We chose matching brass faucets and cabinet hardware but now, after someone on this forum commented about my love of brass, I am really looking around and I DO have a lot of brass around this house. I am kind of a matchy matchy kind of girl I have to admit. And when you are buying a piece here and a piece there you don't realize how it has accumulated until a different set of eyes sees it.

So my question is....can you mix door hardware? As we go though the rooms and remodel/repaint, I am considering changing the door hardware to brushed nickel. Our kitchen remodel included stainless appliances and brushed chrome cabinet hardware, chrome faucets, so we have started. But to replace all the door handles/hinges, etc throughout the house will be an expensive project. So I thought we could do it a little at a time.

What do you think? Would brushed nickel look good on Dover white woodwork? Would you mix finishes on the same door, i.e. hallway would be brass, inside of bathroom would be BN.
