Help! Practically starting from scratch

We're about to be empty-nesters and we're finally, finally going to be able to get some new furniture & do some remodeling.

We got rid of all the old brass & glass light fixtures and went with Oil-Rubbed bronze (contemporary) but our entire house is filled with Scandinavian furniture and honey oak cabinetry. It's gotta go. We are "oranged-out"!

As I always seem to be late to the party, what kind of wood is "in" and not to be out really soon? We're drawn to the espresso woods but isn't that dated already? I haven't kept up with styles and decorating (why torture myself when the $ was needed for kids' college?) so any advice is apopreciated. (We like clean lines, calming colors). TIA.

Well, Scandinavian furniture is very *in* right now!
Do you have any photos? Maybe you can get a new look with a little reupholstery and a change of wall color, new art and rugs....

You mean I've had my Scandinavian furniture so long that it's back in style?! ha ha I love the clean lines but the teak has turned orangey & I thought it'd be really dated.

And then we have that "80's Builder's Oak" cabinetry in the kitchen and the baths. (Now I'm pretty sure that's dated). I'm not a real trendy person but things DO go out of style (i.e. brass & glass) and don't want to look like I'm caught in a time-warp. (I once bought a picture I really liked and later saw it in our local McDonalds... and then in a restaurant bathroom... I don't trust myself).

"We're drawn to the espresso woods but isn't that dated already?"

LOL, pretty much anything that has a new name for it can get dated, quickly. Merlot is another finish that comes to mind. Postum is correct about the Scandinavian look.

Pick up some design mags like House Beautiful or Architectural Digest (you'll find clean lines in AD) or look at blogs and see what appeals to you. The easiest way for your look to stay current is to mix and match it a bit. Have some natural wood, some painted and, usually, throw in something black.

The different forums on GW (kitchens, home dec, etc) all have some nice eye-candy. Have you checked the Gallery that you can access at the top of the posts?

"Our entire house is filled with Scandinavian furniture.........It's gotta go."

That clicking sound you hear, is hundreds of readers clicking on your profile to see if you live close to them, and if you have an email addy listed.

Scandinavian design furniture is known to be good quality and timeless in style. If the teak has aged you may try a different color scheme for offset the orange tone you say you hate. Maybe bring in some Teal or Turquoise? Or go with brighter Tangerine and Sunflower?

"I once bought a picture I really liked and later saw it in our local McDonalds... and then in a restaurant bathroom... I don't trust myself."

Don't fret. I bought a Nagel way back before he was famous. Then I started seeing his stuff in nail salons and cheezy discos. It is in my attic now. I KNOW there will be renewed interest in his work someday. Heck, maybe there will even be renewed interest in Purple plastic frames, with Violette matting, and I won't even have to reframe it. :)

Whoa. You mean I really am in style? House of Denmark teak? The truth is, I still really like the look but thought I was hopelessly outdated. Now you all have me reconsidering.
Maybe with a new fabric sofa and other accessories like rugs & lamps, I can tone down the orange and actually be in style?? THAT is definitely cost-effective. hmmm...

How familiar this sounds to me! Watch out, it is a slippery slope once you start changing things LOL. I redid the kitchen EXCEPT I kept the oak cabs, and am happy with it. But as I moved along to the liv/dining room, painted, some new furniture, I was drawn into dark wood, and now my teak dining table and hutch look way out of place. I am hoping to find the perfect dark wood dining set and console. And hoping someone will love my teak set (like I used to). Or daughter can have it.
I hope the oak cabs come back in style when I sell my house someday, they are all over the house!!

Oh Tessa, we "need" to see some pictures please. If you don't have a photobucket album, get one, add photos and copy and paste the html code (third one down) into your message box here. The picture won't show up until you preview. I'm sure I'm not the only one drooling at the thought of all the eye candy you have.
Drool won't sticky up my keyboard, will it?
