Need help with layout

16 years ago

Can you please help us with some layout ideas? This is our first house, and we're hoping to do a complete overhaul of our 1950s kitchen using a modest budget of $20-25K.

Here's the layout that we came up with, but we need tweaking.

Here are our goals.

1. Our layout has seating for only 3 people at the peninsula next to the future sliding glass doors. (Currently, there's just a 3 foot door there.) How do we turn this into seating for 4 people?

2. Other windows and doors cannot be moved. We'd like to keep the sink where it is currently, centered along the window.

3. Is there a better use of space? We don't necessarily like the island cooktop with island hood over it, but we don't know where else to put the cooktop.

Legend:

DISH = dishwasher

SINK = 33 inch sink base cabinet

P24WP27D = 90 inch tall pantry cabinet that's 24 inches wide and 27 inches deep

P9W24D = 90 inch tall pantry cabinet that's 9 inches wide and 24 inches deep

Boards = We were hoping to put wooden boards behind the Lazy Susan to push it out an additional 3 inches so that it's in line with the double oven pantry next to it.

F3 = 3 inch fillers

    Where does the doorway on the "bottom" go? (35" opening)

    Oven cabinets are 24" deep, not 27"

    A 27" deep pantry is pushing it as far as usefulness is concerned

    You get a much better use of space in that corner if you put in standard cabinets straight across instead of a corner susan and then nothing. If, OTOH, you plan to put a cabinet against the other end, then you might be better off w/the corner susan...but I suggest you make it one w/the 90 degree cut instead of diagonal for more maneuvering space at the ovens.

    How do you feel about a step-in or reach-in pantry instead of cabinets? Cabinets are usually more expensive than a drywalled walk-in, step-in, or reach-in pantries.

    Is the wall open on the other side of the cooktop? I.e., is this a kitchen w/both legs open to the other side? (Kind of like mine...)

    Here is the other version of how our kitchen floorplan would look. Please help us choose which one you like better. You'll find version B below. (Version A is above.)

    Are you killing off the doorway on the right wall? If Where do the other two door ways go?

    It sounds like you're replacing a single door with a slider. Since the space is so small, perhaps think about a single french door and lengthening the cabinet run.

    If you look at the dw and the sink together, you can either open the dw or stand at the sink, but not both at the same time. This might not be important to you, it would be important for me.

    I've made additional tweaks to my layout because of your questions and suggestions.
    See below.
    Thank you!

    Thank you!
    Let me know if you can think of any other ideas.

    Also, to answer you, here are some responses.
    1. The double oven wall cabinet that comes with the cabinet line is 27" deep.
    2. We already have the diagonal lazy susan, so we placed it in the corner that you see. If you think that it might go better somewhere else, please let me us know.
