It depends on what you're making. If a garment, it will hang badly if cut off grain.

If it's a pillow or cushion, or a small upholstery project, cut it with the pattern. Otherwise the item will look like crap, LOL. I'm an upholsterer, and have worked with off-grain prints often. Unless it's an inch or more off-grain, it shouldn't be a problem in a small project.

If I got fabric more than an inch off-grain, I would send it back - but that was only huge cuts for upholstering furniture.

I wanted to mention or caution you, if you ever see a bunch of same remnants in many bundles, usually they are off grain.

Straighten it by pulling it diagonally. This usually takes 2 people because of the length of the diagonal. Pull from one corner to the opposite corner and then do the same with the next 2 opposite corners. Check to see if it is straight and which corners need more pulling.

Often when fabric is put on rolls it is put on crooked and results in the fabric being off grain. Pulling diagonally usually straightens it completely or enough to be usuable.

Thanks so much for all your quick responses. This is just a yard remnant from a fabric discount house. I'll get my husband to try straightening it with me but if that doesn't work will cut with the pattern, which is so pronounced I think any offness would really be obvious. I'm still making pillows.

For a piece that small, I wouldn't bother with the tugging. That works better for a print that's woven into the fabric. It doesn't work at all well for a mis-printed decorator fabric.

You are right Mary!! The Op did say it was off grain though, not printed crooked. It won't work at all if it is just printed crooked.
