Kitchen layout help.

I am new to this site and think it is wonderful. It is full of great information and ideas. We are preparing to build our first home and need help with the kitchen layout. The picture is just a rough idea. We would be open to changes. Thanks for looking and we appreciate any advice.

You have to traipse approx. 8 ft. or more across the kitchen from your range to sink. Not a very functional situation. I actually think I would prefer making your frig area a reach in pantry with narrow depth shelving and elongate your range run to include the frig (you'll need a filler) and prep sink. Then you separate your working area and clean-up area.

This isn't a kitchen that will support multiple workers, if that's a concern, because of traffic crossing and workers standing in each others' way. Also, like Remodelfla pointed out, the work path for the cook isn't very efficient, and I see lots of walking and dripping across the floor.

I would want to move the fridge to the stove run, and put the cleanup area on the right, then have a rectangular, one-level island across from the stove, with a prep sink. It'd probably help to do a rectangular pantry, still in the corner and only extending along the stove run, giving more space on the right wall.

We have considered a rectangular island? Do you think that this would work better?

This is what I meant. It's not huge, but gives you zones, and separated work spaces. A nice big island for projects, buffet, seating and visiting, prep while looking toward your guests/family...and with a prep sink, so you don't prep food over dirty dishes and your workpath is very tight and efficient.

One more thought about the kitchen plan: The rectangular island plan also gives a little expansion area to the dining space for bigger dinners.

Something else I just noticed: I would be worried about the laundry space you show. It's in a walk-through spot and is so tiny. No place for laundry (dirty or clean), folding, baskets, etc. We have at least 2 sets of friends who have had laundry rooms like this and they hated them, and wanted to remodel because if it. Also, you have no storage handy to that garage entry... Will that be a problem? Both of those things could be resale negatives down the line.

Here are some pictures of what we are considering. I like the one without the corner pantry better. Anyone else?
