We have had your kind of door before, in our last house. I was never sure how I felt about these types of doors. They are very useful, but not sure if they are the best resource.

Anyone else have opinions for or against these types of doors?

We had Pella windows and doors with the blinds between the glass in a prior home, and they were nothing but trouble. Conceptually, I think they're a great idea, but we must have gotten dozens of lemons in our (multiple replacement) orders.

Our current home has quite a few french doors, and most have plantation shutters on them. The man who built the shutters used very strong magnets between the shutter panels and their frames so that they won't fall open when the doors are opened/closed, and he put extenders on the ORB lever door handles for clearance. In one room, dh installed a curtain rod above the four door frames and hung panels w/ grommets that can easily be pulled to each side. The hardware was installed so that the panels clear the door frames and do not impede opening the doors.

I too have those french doors in my master going to the patio. I've not had trouble with the lift or tilt on them. I personally don't care for the look of the small aluminum mini blinds. I would rather have had 2" blinds mounted to the doors. I think the 2" blinds gives a much more substantial, decorator look and they can be held down with brackets to prevent the "clanking". New doors with blinds between the glass have come a long way!

We moved in with a back door that had a traditional set of 2" blinds. What a noisy pain in the butt and aesthetically displeasing. I could not wait to change out the door with blinds in the pane. As long as you're gentle with the mechanism, they'll work fine.
