fireplace almost done.

We had a solid dark red brick wall in our living room I felt it really darkened the room and dated it. We drywalled over the majority of the brick and painted it. I had an image of multi colored slate and mosaic tiles. Because we are thinking of selling in the future I didn't want to go as wild and crazy as I might have liked to.

Here's some pictures of how it turned out. I made the leaf shaped tiles out of clay fired in a kiln. The grout color is called magnolia. I still have to seal it, and install baseboard and oak trim around the perimeter of it to frame it in,

Here's a picture of the wall when we started framing it. The hearth had been an open shelf and it wasn't lined up with the fireplace so we demoed some of it. There had been an opening in the wall to pass firewood in from the outside. I just found all that brick so depressing and dark.

I pushed my way in the door(she was on her way to work!lol!) and saw this in person!!! WOW!!! FABULOUS!!!!! It just opens up the room so much, loosing all that outdated brick!!! Her handmade tiles are just such gorgeous colors!!! I don't know what I like more, her Kitchen Backsplash or this!!! She has taken a little Plain Jane house AND yard, and transformed it into a beautiful pc of eye candy!!!

Gosh glad you all liked it. I'm really glad it's over. Janie grabbed a wrought iron sewing machine base for me from a thrift store. I put a piece of glass on top temporarily but it badly is crying to me to glass on glass with it. I'll wait till I'm back from the mexico trip and then start it. I had made a special tile for the centre of the mosaic and then backed out from using it.I had made a mans face with a leaf pattern around the outside of it. Kind of a green man. We're thinking of selling so easn't sure I should go to crazy with this. Crackpot, and anyone else if you come to the island I will do a cement carving workshop if you want to learn. They are pretty heavy to ship, but fun to make,

I've been having computer troubles, (hopefully they're fixed now) and haven't been able to keep up with everyone's doings. I fell asleep early & woke up to get some aspirin for a headache, but had to come look at one post to check up.

What a post to open! You've done some real work on your fireplace wall, and it looks really nice! I love the little lizard among the leaves, and the tiles are a really nice facing to the fireplace too. Now I'm back off to bed, to dream of new projects!:)

WOW!! Now that's a beautiful change for the better! You are so lucky to have a kiln and all. I would love to have one. My Mom gave one away to a carpenter as payment for work done on her house. Now she wishes I had started my trip into mosaicland two years earlier. She would have handed it over. ARGH!!

    Wonderful work!!

CINDY: What more can be said - you're a real professional. That's an outstanding makeover. Have you considered offering hand-made tiles for sale on your website? Haven't checked your site for a long time. I'll get the name of it next week. Too sick to peruse the net lately.
