Mosaics in 24 hours - ack! Future WIP help

Hello . .

Sorry about being away, my regular job has been keeping me busy. No time for art!

So it's that time of year again . . . I was asked if I would do a mosaic for my son's schools Silent Auction. Originally it was just his homeroom, now the project will represent the entire 6th grade, gulp.

I have decided to ask the teachers to have the kids write one sentence. That sentence needs to say how they would make something, someone or somewhere better. It could be recycle my trash, floss my teeth, change my brothers diaper for Mom, become President, be nicer to people, really anything.

I figure I'll sort the best of them into three groups and then design and create 3 different sets/auctions of themed garden stones for a total of 9. I would really love to put the words under crash glass (shattered tempered glass) but I'm having a difficult time locating laminated glass. I have tried using the welbond on both sides of tempered but it seems to still shatter to much. Anyone have any suggestions?

In the meantime, I had to have a preview item for Grandparents day. Naturally I forgot and turned a stone out in 24hrs. I struggled for sayings and figured well this will just be "representative". haha Sure, it's cute but what a mess lol. I grabbed the only thing I had in my backyard, boy was it beat up on the corners! Slapped down paint, printed sayings and tiled it with irridescent glass. So whats with the "no border"? Where was I when I put those hot pink gems on there? And why did I not mask those scrabble letters before grouting? I know better than that?

This is why it is so important to plan ahead, take the time needed to design and arrange it. You'll be so much happier with the outcome in the long run!

Any help on the crash glass would be great!

Wow! Sounds like you have quite a project ahead of you!
Your garden stones with the kids sayings is a great idea!
And you did that pretty stone in just ONE day?!?
I think it's really cool and I like the hot pink gems, gives it a punch!

Good grief, MOO - makes me tired just reading what you have in store. FABULOUS on the 24-hr. mosaic. LOVE it. You'll figure it all out. From what I see, you need no help/advise. Wish I could find those hot pink gems, and YES, same happened to me on the scrabble pieces. W/a teensy brush, I painted them again successfully. On the tempered glass, all our auto glass shops in town give it away. Have you tried a salvage yard?

What a great idea for a project! O love the colors and angels, and the hot pink gems are not so bad really.

For the scrabble tiles, I usually seal them with Polycrylic before using them in a mosaic. Then they resist staining and clean easily.

I'm with slow on the auto glass shops for the glass. They usually are very interested why you want it, but are glad to give.

I've never used the Weldbond to slow cracking, but I know Linlee tried. She said there was no difference between using it, and not.

WOW!!! I LOVE This!!! There is nuthin' wrong with this pc!!! You are too hard on yourself! The pink gems are perfect!!! Glad you are back and posting pics too!!! How about posting some more pics!!

You could also just use a textured clear glass. I've seen some that almost resembles crash glass.

I think it looks awesome... hot pink gems and all (where'd you get those wonderous colored things anyway?) lol

awe yeah, spring auctions right around the corner and this time I've been taken advantage of... argh

Well thank you all for the nice words, I appreciate it. I just happen to be just slightly obsessive (understatement ha) and a huge perfectionist. Those of you who have seen my other work probably know this already lol.

Those pink gems? Ummm I think they came in a Yugiho game my kids had a long time ago. Nothing goes to waste in this house! ha You can easily glass paint the base of clear stones for the same effect. I do it all the time.

I've checked the car glass people, for insurance reasons they don't seem to want to give it up. Looks like a salvage yard is my best bet.

In the meantime, here's my inbetween project that is a commission. Right up my alley as its contrast basic colors (my fav) and well a sample of my sick perfectionist tendancies at work. Tedious for sure! I'll post updates as she progesses.
