Bed 'runner'

A comment in another thread about using a folded duvet for appearance reminded me of something I've seen twice recently in hotel rooms, both in chains owned by Marriott: a panel similar to a table runner, placed across the foot of the bed, in colors that complemented the rest of the room. It's made of quilted fabric, only 15 inches or so wide, and as long as the width of the bed, so its sole function is to be decorative.

Yup, we had one of those when we stayed for a week in a Residence Inn in Indiana earlier this year. Only problem was it was made out of a silky fabric and tended to move. It was always on the floor in the morning. The cats napped on it like they do the folded quilted coverlet at home.

We call them foot warmers around here. You can find them at such stores as Home Goods and TJ Max. Really they are mostly for looks.

I've seen those in Marriot hotels, too. My thought is that it's to protect the bottom end of the bed spread from guests who plunk down on the bed to watch TV and leave their shoes on. It's a lot easier to replace the little runner if it gets stained or worn out than it is to replace the entire bed cover. The runner also added a nice touch of color like Okmoreh mentioned.

Very trendy right now! I shopped for ones in Indonesia and the quality of the textile really made the price vary :0)

I removed it from the bed every night even though I didn't have the cats with me.

BTW, when I was trying to see how a red throw would look at the foot of the bed in the guest room, the only thing I had on hand to simulate it was an accent rug, so I folded it and lay it on the bed.

I had forgotten about those- we stayed in a residence inn in April and I thought it was a very nice way to add an accent pattern/color etc on a full white comforter. I thought it was a very practical idea actually. Reminded me of a silky scarf though I am sure many fabrics will fit the bill.

    Sounds like they have multipurposes.

I was in Paris a few years ago and the place we stayed had them on the beds. I loved them and looked in the stores and saw them in the bedding dept. I did not buy one but planned on buying one when I came home.(Canada) It has now been two years and I have not found one anywhere and no sales person knows what I am talking about.
I know they would be easy to make but I cannot sew. Does anyone know can you buy material that is already solid color and quilted like that in order to make one.

I've seen those in hotels, too. They seem lame to me - like they wanted the appearance of a quilt at the foot of the bed but were too cheap to spring for the whole thing.

No more lame than decorative pillows on a bed, lol.

At least you can prop up on pillows, decorative or not. Try covering yourself up with a bed runner.

But who does that? They're generally just for show.

I want one because DH and I like to have a little extra warmth on our feet. Right now we use a down throw, but I would like something that is more decorative and is the full width of the bed. What I can't figure out is how to make a down filled "bed runner," "foot warmer," whatever.
