mosaic on painted surface?

I am new to this forum and to mosaic. I have a painted wood record cabinet with a formica top which has been primed with a special primer (I think it is similar to Kilz) and painted with interior latex semigloss paint. The paint has adhered well for 20 years. I would like to mosaic the top, which is about 60" long by 15" deep. How should I prepare the surface? Do I need to remove all the paint first? Do I also need to remove the laminate? What adhesive do you suggest? Thank you for any and all suggestions!

I would just sand it till it's rough . That'll give it some "tooth" for the adhesive to stick to. Popular glues some of use is GE SiliconII -- door & window Caulk .....and ..... I've had great luck with E-6000 ,too.
Weldbond works great on Glass on Glass mosaics . So many choices ! LOL By the way -------- **Welcome ** to the forum & to the addiction - I Mean craft. Don't ever be afraid to ask questions - we're all here to help each other out :)

I would remove the paint. I would be afraid of how the glue might react with it, and you could end up with a real mess! I don't think it would be that hard to do.

I am about to add mosaic to a painted table. I think I painted it a year or so ago. I will lightly ruff it with sand paper to give it some tooth for the silicone. I always paint my wood items with primer and then mosaic. Since this table has already been painted I am not going to use primer again.

What I read about using primer on wood is to seal it up so when grouted the moisture from the grout does not go into the wood amd make it swell. I see many do not prime the wood so maybe that really is not a problem.Or maybe they are using a clear primer???

I would say if you are concerned with the glue reacting with the paint. Dab a little on a painted area hopefully where it will not show too much and just let it sit a day or two and see what happens. I have not had a problem with the silicone reacting to latex. So far. Knock on wood.

I thinnk Clamity did some mosaic on a laminate bathroom counter??

Hey! You remember that?! I just slapped some regular house paint on it that I was using on the walls, just to give the adhesive something to stick to. And I just did a little table and just glued it right to it(varnish) and it seems fine. It's staying in the house so I'm not too worried. I live and learn as I go along. So I say "GO FOR IT!!!" Hi! I have a related question for all of you...I want to mosaic a large glazed ceramic vase. My sister had it and didn’t like the color so she spray painted it white and then hated that. Now I’m hopefully going to make it beautiful again (the original glaze was so pretty so I thought she was crazy when she spray painted it!) but I’m wondering if spray paint would cause problems down the road. I plan to use thin set as my glue since this will be in my garden. I’m new to restoring/revamping things so hope you can help!
