My cabinets came today... In the WRONG color.

Well my cabinets from Shiloh came and they look gorgeous. Too bad we ordered and really wanted POLAR white, but had soft white shipped to us instead.... I feel really bad for the cabinet dealer as they are a sweet family business, but I really want what I ordered. The soft white is lovely, but we have an open kitchen/dining/living room and wanted a crisper white to match with trim etc. Plus our kitchen is not super bright. Disappointed because even though we were behind schedule and not ready for them, if we have new ones made we will most certainly be waiting on them at some point.

I talked with the wife and she said all my paper work says polar so not sure who dropped the ball. I have e-mails and contracts stating Polar white. I stopped payment on the check I gave him today for the balance just to be safe. Anything else I should do?

Should I even consider keeping these cabinets for a large discount (at least 50% or more)? Even that I am not certain will make me happy as I really put a lot of thought into the color I wanted.

I don't know, a 50% discount is pretty amazing but if you're never going to be happy with them, no amount of discount will be good enough. And, a few weeks delay is not really that big a deal when you think of the lifetime of these cabinets in your kitchen. You should feel 100% happy with them.

I think it would depend on how MUCH of a difference. After a while, we don't notice that stuff as much. But if they have a certain tint to them like for instance a yellow or grey that would look awful in your space than no amount of money would make me back down.

CKGM- I have no idea what undertones they would have, I am certain it would look okay(they are nice cabinets), but not as I really wanted. I did not look into the color at all so I have no idea if there is an undertone or what not. I also ordered my BS, quartzite all based on the polar white. I was only considering Shiloh's Arctic white or the Polar white and not the soft white at all.....

this is a link to the paint colors:
    http://shilohcabinetry.com/our_products/finishes/paint_main.html
IMO they are a bit brighter in person.

If they offer to take them back and re-paint them at the factory is that a logical solution or would that be too much paint on them and make the finish less durable? They are maple beaded inset. I want to make sure I don't agree to something that is not a great solution for me.

Two ways of looking at this:

You didn't get exactly what you ordered and the project will get massively delayed and more complicated and cost you time and money even if they redo the cabinets for free.

The universe just smiled at you and decided to give you a chance to save thousands of dollars by accepting something very close to, but not exactly, what you ordered.

(That's supposing that they offer you a huge discount - if they don't, make them do it right).

As to repainting: The question is where are they being repainted? Is it at the factory? My understanding from the people who love painted cabinets is that the finishes are far more durable than a site-based can and brush.

I would repost the repainting question over on the Paint forum.

Oh yes I would not settle on anything less than factory finished for the repainting. I would rather the wrong white than a brushed finish. We have painted our cabinets before and the finish is not the same.

As for the discount. I would not accept anything less than 50%, not that they offered that. I have no idea if they would offer that type of discount.

Will this white work with the other elements you have picked out? If not, can those elements be changed or is there money tied up in those that you would lose? If you would lose any money for changing your mind on the bs or the counters--make sure they cover that too.

Personally, if I did not dislike the warmer white, I would try to get a huge discount and keep them.

You may recall (and you may not) that about a week and a half ago the wrong width floor was being installed in my new house. I discovered the mistake after they had put more than 50% down. The flooring company didn't want to rip it out and wait for the right stuff to arrive. Before they even had the opportunity to offer any compensation, we told them we would keep it if they installed it in 2 more rooms on the first floor and the 2nd floor hallway. They agreed. In the long run, it is beautiful. It is traditional, and when we go to sell this house someday--nobody will look at the 2 1/4" floor and say "geez, if it was 3 1/4" we would buy this house".

So, I think in the long term, will it bug you? You deserve to get what you have your heart set on. But in my case, I feel like it was a very lucky mistake for us. If you can make it work, you should squeeze them for money.

    Good luck
    Bee

Bee, yes I thought about that, especially since we are doing a whole house remodel and could use the money elsewhere. While I do not dislike it, I would be settling just a bit. I mean I have never had new cabinets ever, so anything would be awesome.

I just talked with him and he feels awful, it was completely his fault and he does not want me to feel badly at all for wanting him to fix it. He did mention that he would do a discount but it doesn't seem like I would want that, so we did not discuss it. Did not sound like it would have been 50%. He is just going to re-order them tomorrow. Honestly if we were ready for cabinets to be installed I would be tempted to keep them and get a discount, but we are still about 4 weeks away.

I have already picked out and paid for my quartzite counter and BS. While they would probably work with the soft white, they will look terrific with the polar white. We do plan on keeping this house for the long haul. I do love a good bargain so part of me is tempted to see how much of a bargain I would get....

Bee I have and like 2 1/4 floors right now, they are very pretty. In that situation where they are already installed you definitely did the right thing and good for you for getting an awesome deal.

It seems to me that if the cabinet dealer's paperwork is all correct and they ordered the correct color, then it is the factory who should eat all the return costs, etc. Why should you settle, and why should the dealer be out of pocket?

I've thought about this after my original post. Have you read the thread the other day about straying from perfect? I think this situation applies. I think I would take the discount if it is large enough.

I settled on so much during our build. But overall, I'm very happy and I don't question everything now that it's over.

I ended up getting a warmer/creamier white than I wanted. It was my color blind fault. I picked everything out to go with the white. My kitchen would be perfect if they were white but it is still beautiful. I have really struggled letting go. If you are going to feel like you are giving up on what you want by settling then reordering is a smart thing to do. If you really like them then take the discount. Go with what you want and don't feel guilty.

I am absolutely the first to scream, "DON'T SETTLE" but if they're beautiful, there are many things to consider:

I have learned with my bathroom marble, that a creamier white goes with absolutely everything, where stark whites (polar is stark) can often yellow or make other finishes "off".

If this is in another room, does the lighting change it anyway, that cream might be considered the result, or is it just something you hate?

Beaded inset: If it's not factory finished (who should absolutely eat this cost, not the cabinet people), beaded inset is hard to paint. I mean people must be CAREFUL with any fine detail or paint builds up. The corners are the first to gum up with paint. The factory can easily strip this stuff and repaint. (I live for beaded inset and am painting mine very carefully.)

Will they offer you the discount to redo them, given the time it's costing you?

But really, I have to go back to my mantra of DON'T SETTLE. Instead, decide what's best for you.

Sounds like you got the solution you wanted:)

ratrem - that has to be SO disappointing. I'm glad that they offered to make it right for you.

On the upside...CEFreeman - sounds like there are some beautiful beaded inset cabinets that are going to be sold for a huge discount. Time for a road trip?!

Brian-I am already not expecting perfection, and we did have to compromise somewhat on everything as we have a budget.

I am happy with how he handled it, he was 100% a great man and businessman.I do feel badly that I am not just settling for the off white order, like I am being too picky and thus causing him money. He told me he would never let me settle with anything as this is his fault 100%. It was not the factories fault he put the wrong color in the computer even though our paperwork stated the Polar white and he never tried to pass it off on the factory at all. I feel really badly that he will be losing money on this deal and plan to use him again when it comes time to order our bathroom vanity as well and other things.

He told me not to worry about the cabinets that are in the basement now, not sure what that means if he plans on picking them up or not, maybe its not worth it to him. I am sure he would be interested in selling them though if anyone is close.

ayerg78 has a very good point.
I wasn't going to "vulture" on someone's horror.

Ratrem, where are you and what dimensions do you have?
I am very interested and willing to drive if it's not across country! I'm in the Washington, DC area. Really, please ask him what he'd like for them.

    Cream is good for me!

I am in the Boston area.... I can find out what he plans on doing with them. I had all bases except for 3 tall pantry units.

    Hmmm...
What are your base widths and are they drawers?
And the pantries... how wide and deep?

Then we'll see what he might want for them.

OH! I wonder if I could fit them in my truck! [LOL]

    These are the plans

Dearheart, these are very nice drawings. I don't have glasses strong enough to magnify them. In the meanwhile, I'm going to install my printer and try to make them bigger.

Should we take this privately, BTW? I'm really not joking about being interested...

You are more than welcome to email me at CFreeman at eveningsfall dot com.

    OK,
    I'm looking harder. I think I'm seeing two, 3-drawer 24" bases. A 36" 3-drawer base.

    The others I can't decode.
    I think I see two W2412, L & R. But 12" tall?
And what bases are under the W24s?
Is that a RW (Refrigerator wall) 3624? oooooooo
And your pantry = 27" wide? Utility cabs 96" tall?

    I'm definitely interested.
I'm dying to find out what the ones I can't read are, and what your guy would like!

I'm hoping it would be a good situation for both of us! :)

Shot sorry the photo isn't as clear, not sure why that happened.
    It is:
    2 24" 3 drawer base

2 24" dishdrawer cabinets with only a single tall dishdrawer in each (so I guess a 12" drawer underneath) flanking the sink

    33" farmhouse sink base

    36" 3 drawer base cabinet

2 blind cabinets for the corners with pullouts in them

1 36" refrigerator cabinet with open top for TV.

    2 15"w 96"T pull out pantries

1 27"w 96"t micro cabinet with roll out cabinets under (supposed to be drawers, wasn't going to say anything but now having fixed)

    1 18" trash pullout

    1 6" spice

    Oh, yea.
I'm interested in 8 at the moment.
    How deep are the pantries?

I have to go to work and won't be back until about 11:00 pm.
I'll send you a list and you could ask your fellow about prices and me getting to them or them getting to me. Can you email me a pic of one in the style?

Just out of curiosity, which really doesn't matter, what is your door style?
I'm interested. I have beaded inset cabinet fever.

I can't really e-mail a pic because they are at the house in the basement wrapped on pallets. They style is Shiloh Homestead Beaded Inset, soft white paint. All the bases are 24 deep. I spoke to him today I think he wants to use most of the inserts from the cabinets in the new ones.

Would you like to give me a phone number?
I can call him and get you out of the middle. The inserts I don't care about.

Yes, I'd assume base cabinets are 24" deep, but are the pantries? the utility closet?

    Thanks!

    Ratrem,
I guess I should be more clear for your fellow:
I don't care about drawers, door or drawer fronts, pull-outs, or anything else like that.

All I'm interested in is the carcasses, which he might be pretty glad to get rid of. He can order your cabs and reuse all the drawers, pull-outs, Lazy Susans, and things like that.

As I mentioned last night, I'd be glad to speak with him directly and take you out of the middle.

    Thanks!
    Christine

I'm sorry to keep bothering you, but I keep having questions!

Your plan lists 2 W2412s I asked you about. Are they actually only 12" tall?

I also don't know what the codes mean for the 2 base cabinets on your peninsula.

    What's a BWDM18 and a BPOS or BPo5, and a FF30? I can't logically decipher them from the list you posted.

I hope you don't mind how excited I am at the cabinet potential. You never know what's going to pop up!
I really look forward to hearing from you, either here or via email.

Sorry, I feel I have to point something out on this thread, unless I missed it somehow, in which case pls forgive the redundancy:
You are going to be delayed by the reorder, where is the discount for that? Not 50% of course, but 10% or even 5% off as well as replacing the cabinets would not be out of order. We all know how the timing of a new kitchen is so important. Balancing schedules between electricians, plumbers, painters and yes, cabinet makers. The cabinet dealer should compensate you for sitting around, burning up time and budget.
I think you have no reason to feel bad. He messed up. I feel bad for the guy on a personal level, I do. But this is what he does for a living. He should have offered you a discount for his mistake in ADDITION to the reorder, right away. He's counting his lucky stars you are feeling guilty for his mistake. Just sayin'.

Mrs. Bung- I know, I just can't help to feel badly for him as it is going to cost him a lot of money to fix this. He said it is the first time in 40 years he has done this... Right now we are behind schedule so the we will not be ready for cabs for another 2-4 weeks. But yes if the cabs take a full 6 weeks to remake we will be definitely inconvenienced, as it is we will be living in temporary housing with our possessions in storage while our condo is being finished after our house closes (we did almost an entire gut, new electrical, plumbing, walls, ceilings). I will be commuting back and forth with a 2year old at my parents house and my husband will be staying here for work. So I might be more upset when it comes time to move and we still do not have kitchen.... But it will be summer so BBQ's, refrigerator, dishes in the tub, and micro for a few extra weeks won't kill us.

Freeman- BWDM18 (trash 18" pullout) and a BPOS or BPo5 (pullout spice rack 6"), and a FF30 (this is just for a 3 inch spacer that we changed to 1.5"). the two 24" 12 cabs are for our 2 dishdrawes, we only have one oversized dishdrawer on each side with 12" tall drawer underneath, so the cab is regular height but most of it is a cavity space for the dishdrawers. All the tall pantries are 24" deep.
I sent him an e-mail I have no idea if he intends on taking them out of our basement. My husband talked with Aunite last night that lives beneath us (2 family house) and she might want them for her kitchen (very similar floor print), but I am not sure if it was the meds talking (she just had major surgery yesterday). Technically it is our responsibility to remodel as we our the new owners, but we cannot afford that right now. Not sure if she wants to see about buying them for a potential future remodel when we recover financially. I will keep you posted next week via private e-mail. All the drawers/doors woud be intact just not any inside extras.

That would be great for your fellow, too !

Well, I'm waiting with bated breath. Thanks for getting back to me!

    Morning!

Have you heard anything??? Homestead is what my cabs were styled after! Fingers and toes crossed!!

    Nancy

    Ratrem, any decisions yet?
    Just checking in..

Still waiting to hear what he wants to do, and how much $$$ if he wants to sell them.

    Thank you!

I've been watching this thread, of course. I'm sure you understand!

I hope your cabinet guy is more responsive than this, since you started this thread on May 2nd, the conversation about selling started the 3rd, and here it is the 11th!

    I remain interested!
    Christine

    Hello Ratrem!
I'm trying not to cyber-stalk you, but thought I'd check in about your cabs?

    Christine

Sorry have been so busy. We moved our entire house ourselves (DH and I) against my wishes (really wanted to hire help). I have two small businesses so with lots of inventory plus all the stuff one acccumulates in a bedroom house. So we have had a fun, stressful few weeks.

The cabinets still sit in my basement and I am not sure what he intends to do with them as he has not told me anything new. We are still a few weeks away from our new condo being ready and new cabinets to come in. I will know more then as he will have to make a decision. For now we are living with various family membrs.

    You poor, exhausted thing.
I don't blame you for wanting help. I hope to never do that again. Move, or do it myself!

Well, when he comes up with something, I'm here.

update finally, I can sell them for him. The price is more than 50%,,,, $6500 for the whole lot.....not sure how negotiable or if he is interested in breaking up the order. Perhaps yes on both. Pick up would be in Boston at my house as the cabinets have been there since the mess up. If there is any interest let me know. Not sure how the message system here works though, but I set up an e-mail shilohcabinets@gmail.com If there is any interest. I am going to put them on craigslist for him in a few weeks unless someone here wants them. They are taking up valuable storag space in my basement so come get them.

I'm interested, but not in all of them. If he'd let me break them up, I'd get myself there somehow.
    LMK.

Are you interested in most of them?

Your dealer sounds like a stand up person
I am in the Boston area and looking for new cabinetry, could you please send his name and contact information

    Thank you

Pbels please just contact me in that email address in the thread. I have the cabinets in my basement.

I'd already mentioned what I'd like, so I won't go into it again.
Since you have someone closer, I'll bow out.
    I appreciate your time.
