We have an LG counterdepth fridge. It has to be close to 12 years old. I like it and would definitely get another counterdepth. But we also have a second fridge in our mechanical room. My warning would be do not get the ice in the door.

Everyone I know that has one has either a beverage fridge or another small fridge in the garage or pantry

BeverlyFLADeziner, we will have the old fridge and /or a small freezer three steps away in the garage.

clergychick, what's the climate where you live? It you have cold winters, and an unheated garage, a standard fridge or freezer won't work in the garage.

We had an old fridge in the garage when we lived in the northeast and it worked just fine 99.9% of the time. Garage walls had some insulation, but definitely not heated.

We've also had a spare fridge in hot garages in CA and FL, and never had an issue with those either.

When we remodeled about 6 years ago, we got a CD Fridge. It's a GE Profile. It's been great- but yes it really is smaller. We gave away our other fridge ( we probably should have kept it in the garage but it's a tight fit). Honestly the only time it's an issue is Thanksgiving. OTherwise it's really just DH and I . The freezer is more the issue but we mangage fine.

chispa, it's not the heat, it's the cold, though a hot garage will obviously make the appliance work a lot harder. Most fridges with a freezer operate on the temp in the fridge. If the garage gets below the fridge setting (say 30°), the fridge won't run - and neither will the freezer. If one doesn't use the freezer compartment, it should be okay.

The counter depth ones are usually (if not always?) taller so if you have low cabinets over your current fridge you’ll need to decide if you’re willing to raise them or modify them to accommodate the height of the new one. My hubby ended up doing a quick modification of the cabinets we had when we bought our first one.

Thanks, SKmom. This would be part of a total kitchen remodel, so we won’t need to alter existing ones, but now i know we will need to pick a model early enough to have the height requirements before the cabinets are ordered.

Counter depths fridges cost twice as much, but they do make a nice difference.

We’ve had a fisher paykel one for 11 years and I love it. So easy to organize and nothing gets lost in the back

I'm from the old Gardenweb days too! I was KOMPY.

I just purchased a very inexpensive French Door refrigerator (no ice in door!!!!)

So far, I love it. It's bare bones but works for me and DH. The freezer capacity is VERY small, but I don't mind. DH and I have been empty nesters since 2020. We pretty much go to the grocery store almost daily these days to get what we need for the day. We don't waste nearly as much food as we did before. We love it like this!

I got the following refrigerator. It was on sale at the time for $ 1,599 plus tax, including delivery and setup.

This refrigerator has a great icemaker! The shelving seems a bit skimpier than some....but for us....this refrigerator has been great. Like I said, smaller capacity freezer....but just enough for our Yasso Bars! LOL

Thanks for sharing your experience and the information. You had me at "great icemaker"! I do go through a lot of ice! We are empty nesters too, and eat out several times a week, so our needs are not huge. After a recent move we tried living with an old refrigerator in the basement rather than buying a freezer like the small one we left behind. We discovered that we needed the freezer space more than fridge space so we got another little one for this house. We won't start 'kicking the tires' on anything new for a while yet, but will look for that model when we do.

P.S. What's a Yasso Bar?

I’ve had a KitchenAid counter depth French door since 2014. My next refrigerator will also be a counter depth. I checked carefully to make sure that I would have the room in the refrigerator box that I needed for four people. I’ve always used a fair amount of fresh vegetables and fruit so those drawers were important to me. Mine has a deli drawer and I have found that to be invaluable. I understand that currently the Bosch 800 is probably the best on the market due to function and repairability. YouTube Harper & Knowles for his analysis. It’s a very recent review.

@clergychick, Yassos are frozen yogurt pops. Some flavors also come in pints. Low calorie. Minimal sugar. Made with real fruit. They’re delicious! Yasso

They’re available in supermarkets. I even order them from Amazon, with the rest of my grocery order.

We also have a counter depth fridge. We have a chest freezer in garage and always had plans of getting a big fridge for mudroom but never did. You adjust.

I have had a counter depth Kitchen Aid fridge in my kitchen for 9 years. Even with four sons at home I found it sufficient and much easier to keep organized that a full depth fridge. I do have a fridge (mainly for drinks and oversized items) and freezer (for meat) in the garage.

@Clyde Kalvin do you recommend not getting a fridge with ice in the door bc of the space it takes up? Or some other reason?

FWIW, the GE Profile CD that we have has the icemaker in the freezer, and an Internal water dispenser. I did not want any of it in the door because I had visions of drips and messes . It would also take away space from the fridge. I guess we paid for it with the freezer but it's all good.

I did have one glitch with the water dispenser... it seemed to stop working. I looked on youtube, and someone suggested that it could be frozen. The remedy was easy enough- get a blowdryer and use it , once the veggie drawer is removed.. Sure enough, we had water.

I was so thankful thatI had checked on youtube for the remedy. I figure we saved a few $ by not calling a repair person.

It's Kompy again! Darbuka answered your Yasso question for me! :-) I'll add that they are VERY delicious! I love the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Mint Chocolate Chip...and my DH loves the Fudge Brownie (better than their chocolate fudge). I also just tried the ones with the choclate coating on the outside. OMG YUM!

These bars are made with greek yogurt, only have 100 calories and will satisfy any sweet tooth!

Have you decided yet? we had our first CD fridge in our previous home when we remodeled. It was a side by side with ice in the door. I miss that fridge! We also had a beverage fridge in the kitchen and an overflow fridge in the basement. In our new home we gave a GE Cafe (do they still make those?) CD french door with ice in the door. Also have a beverage fridge and overflow fridge in the basement. Its 14 years old and still going strong.

No issues with the ice/water in the door. If I had to replace, I would consider the fisher paykel integrated fridge freezer.

@nhbaskets Nothing is set in stone at this point, though I’ve not heard anything to disuade me from a counterdepth model. I use a lot of ice, so we’ve come to realize that just an icemaker in the freezer suits us better than one in the door. I’ll check out that FP integrated model, because I have no idea what it means that it’s integrated and I’m curious! Thanks for your comment.

If you’re thinking about an FP, check your local area for competent repair people who have the parts.
