Need Ideas

Hi. I have only done a couple of projects so far, so I am still a "newbie". I found a very nice guy who has given me tons of plexiglass scrap (some very large). They are as thick as 1/2".

So, what would you make out of these? Some are large enough to do a table top, signs, coasters...that's all I can think of. A wall hanging, perhaps?

Is there a particular glue I should use to glue glass tiles to plexiglass/acrylic?

Good morning, GC, and welcome. If your plexi isn't flexible, and it sounds like it's pretty sturdy (I'm not familiar w/it) you can use it for mosaicing. Wall hangings w/be wonderful, as well as coasters and small tables. As I'm trying to wean myself from using GE II cuz it's pure poison and miserable to clean up, I'd suggest you use Weldbond for adhesive. I've seen other artists use Alieen's tacky glue, and others use plain white glue.

Thanks for the reply; just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking something.

I am asthmatic, and from what I've read on this site, I don't think I'll use the GEII because of the smell.

Riana told us of an artist friend of hers - known by many mosaicists - who is dying of cancer and her doctor told her it was directly related to the silicon adhesives she's used for many years. One of my students had a violent reaction to it, and her dr. warned her against it. I'm TRYING to get away from it all together, but it's hard cuz it's such a good adhesive. I'm going w/Weldbond, the Tacky or the Mapei Type II pre-mixed (that's a good adhesive), and for outside projects where I use thinset I'm buying a respirator on my next trip to Lowes.

That's very sad, and scary. I will probably keep away from those products as well. I had cancer a few years back, and don't want to press my luck. I think you would be wise to use a respirator.

Thanks for the advice. I have had no time to do any mosaicing between work and my sick daughter, but am planning to make something very soon. All I've done thus far is my coffee table, and some coasters and signs that aren't done yet. I need more time in my day!

Oh Dear Lord...............now I have to worry about cancer from GEII..............ahhhhhhhhhh...you know how I am with that stuff...........Gripey! Ya thank that's what's wrong with my eyes...............??????

When BAMA and I were using it on Sunday for our switchplates, we were laughing/joking about it, and I said "you gotta die of something, just put a sign on my grave w/a picture of me w/a 'rita in one hand and a tube of GEII in the other w/the caption ""that ole girl died happy"". NOT - I'm leaving it. Too hard to clean up anyway.
