Not sure myself,I have been wanting to mosaic a chiminea from mexico but not sure if the tile would pop off from the heat?????Anyone know?

I say go for it!!! I would just use a cement board cut in a circle and some nice thick slate in different colors! or Porceline, you can but or rent a tile saw or a tile cutter and make a design...oh and use outdoor mortar and outdoor grout and outdoor sealer. I'd go to a tile shop and ask a million questions, they are the proffessionals and are there to get you the right materials for the right job! Have fun and keep us posted!!!

My hubby said he thought cement board would be the best..he is a building contractor & has a nice wet saw for tile..& if you do cut cement board into a circular shape, do you need to do something to the edges?

Can I use glass & not tile? I am wanting bright colors..

I cut cement board w/a box cutter knife - takes several scores, but it works. Just don't try to cut it through on the first run and be sure to wear a mask as you should be doing w/working w/all these cement products. You can use anything you wish - glass ??? does it get really hot underneath - I probably w/watch WHERE I placed the glass. I recommend thinset for the adhesive.

The firepit bowl itself is made out of cast iron & sits 10" off the deck on legs...how hot it gets depends on how long we have a fire going and how blazing we get it..we are pretty sure it would scorch the wood of the deck...the ceramic tiles currently underneath can get too hot to touch with your bare hand..

Would the glass crack if too hot? how hot would that be?

Think I'd stick w/tile - porcelain or slate.

I think you would be fine using glass. The glass would perhaps only break if it were really cold before you started your fire.

My son started a fire in my chimmenea one night...it was cold...got it roaring hot...and broke it!
