glass tile on wood table

OK, new to this. Found a trash table (actually, it's the seat of a chair) and I want to mosaic it with glass pieces. I will paint the legs first, but should I prepaint wood stained top first? I want the colors of my glass tiles to show up in the best way possible. Should I paint the top white first or what color? I'm not sure what color I will grout it--either gray or black. I am going to place this on a covered patio outside, if that makes any difference.
