alabama mommy: inside height needed for two tier insert

hi AB, or anyone else that might know: when you posted your lovely kitchen you told me this drawer was 3" high ...do i have that right? i'm trying to figure out i am able to do a two tier insert in my large flatware drawer which has an inside height of 3.25". can you please clarify your dimensions? anyone know the bare minimum allowance for this type of drawer? my inset drawers have an opening of 5.5". TIA!

the cabinet line I am working with specifies minimum drawer opening of 8-1/2" but I think this is for deeper cutlery inserts than what is shown above. Curious what your thinking is on your cutlery needs as I've been thinking about this lately - trying to decide between a normal cutlery drawer in a top/small drawer, vs. a deeper drawer with a two tier set-up (I don't think what is shown above would be deep enough for me -- in the last house, my silverware was always "stabbing" the frame of the cabinet unless I had everything lying nice and flat... just don't have the time for that!). or option 3: a deeper drawer with vertical cutlery dividers.

my cabinet maker is making a two tier, bottom will have the knife block with the top for silverware, inset draw slab 5 inch, so I think it must fit, I just put my cab order in, but I think if it were a problem, he would have told me, hope that helps because u have been so helpful to me!! tks, Michelle

i realize the serving spoons and larger serving pieces may be a problem so i was working out a plan to only do 2/3 of the drawer with the double inserts. that way i could leave the rest at full depth. the drawer is wide enough to house two sets of flatware (i think). i'm wondering if in fact the inside of AB's drawer is really only 3" in height. if it is, i'm in luck.

i'm thinking i'll send in another drawer (i was going to use as my junk drawer) and have it fitted with the double inserts. that way i'll be able to get a better feel of whether this is a do-able option for the flatware drawer.
when is the fun part?

There are a couple of retro-fit double drawers that pop back when opened, so they don't get in the way.
I was planning to do one but am waiting as I want to keep my "box" and not put some other company in there

okay! i just realized i already have one shallow drawer (same measurements as kitchen) that the cabinet maker made a tiered shelf for in my vanity! i'm so scatter brained lately. going to try the flatware in there tomorrow.

i can keep the next draw down at one level for serving pieces, knives, etc...
