two round tables close together?

I have moved into a different house and have to do the living room layout thing all over again. It only took me three years last time!

The layout in this house is tricky too. This is the best arrangement I can find at the moment, and I need a table between these two chairs. It's hard to tell in the photo but the two chairs are not angled the same, so a square or rectangular table won't work, round is the ticket, but I already have a big round coffee table. Is that too many big round tables too close together? I found a 36" diameter 30" tall round pedestal table at an antique store yesterday that I think is the right size. I think it will look fine, but sometimes my wishful thinking gets in my way. For what it's worth, the tv/table/unpacked boxes beside the fireplace will be replaced with a painted built-in soon, and the curtains and paint will be addressed too. And the front door is our primary entrance so we plan to hang a coat rack to the left of the door and shoes go underneath. Pardon the LEGO and all the stuff on the mantel that hasn't found a home yet. I hate moving!

Here's the view from the dining room:

Personally I much prefer round tables. I feel like they soften a space. Also when you bump your leg on them it's less apt to bruise. I see what you're saying about the square shape not working there. I would definitely go with a round table. It would look cohesive with the coffee table.

You could do round or oval. Love your space! I have always loved round end and coffee tables!!!

I think another round would be fine too.

And as someone with assorted Lego sites in the home, I find yours to be quite tame and orderly. With the game board and the Legos, the coffee table just seems appreciated or something. Lego pile means happy home. Organized Lego pile neatly sitting on a table means happy feet.

I think a second round table will be fine, in fact the best choice for that area. However I suggest cutting a 36" round out of paper and laying it on the floor between the chairs to see how the size works. My round tables are 30" diameter and seem large enough for end tables.

I was just thinking about round tables the other day as I actually have 4 in my LR. There are 2 used as matching side tables (30" diameter) that are skirted at one end of the 28' room, one (27") draped with a steer hide at the other end of the room, and a 42" antique pedestal dining table in the middle of the room. *Might* be too many round tables but I like each of them and probably the decorating police won't visit for awhile! Most people visiting me are not all that much into critical decorating so as long as I like it it's all good. Since there are so many rectangular shapes in my LR I think some round shapes help balance.

Lego is always a nice casual decorating accessory! :D

Without seeing the rest of the room, would it make sense to position the couch in front of the fireplace--back to the front door-- with a chair at each end? This would eliminate the need for a table.

How about an octagonal or hexagonal table? Smaller than 36 inches. That would avoid having two big circles, and still be round-ish.
Another idea is to move the black chair closer to the big round coffee table and have that serve for more than just the sofa.

Ta da. It is large, but I think it needs to be. The room is very odd. If I center the seating and coffee table on the fireplace, there is a huge amount of wasted space behind the seating, but not big enough for any particular thing. I scooted everything off-center of the fireplace, and it works better. I have the black chair a little closer to the couch just for conversation purposes. The slipcovered chair feels far away from the couch to talk. The symmetry police are definitely coming for me!

Thanks for the input everyone! Much more advice-seeking to come....

At first I thought that a 36" table would be awfully big, but I love it! I have been lusting for a table like that for in my library room, but that's where the dog beds are for now, so it's not going to happen for a while.

I stopped at a garage sale yesterday afternoon and spotted a two tiered round end table. Just as I walked up to it, another woman was looking at it. The sellers were going over it with her and she seemed to be sure about it. I bought some other things and just as I was about to pull out from the curb, the woman walked away without the table. I asked the seller if she'd bought it, but apparently she was going to go home to think about it. I told the guy I'd buy it right now, so he sold it to me. $10!! I can't wait to start on the reno for the room it's going in to.

pesky, yes, exactly -- it has a very library-ish feel. You could get a lot of books on it. There's one on it in the photos above and there's still plenty of room for a drink and lamp and decorative items. Tiered tables are also great for stacking books, and they are really hard to find. I found one on craigslist recently but it was only 12"w by 24"h. Several years ago Eddie Bauer had a "library" line of tables with coffee and side tables. The side tables had several horizontal shelves and the coffee table must have been 2 or maybe even 3 levels. They are nowhere to be found now. I could really use about 3 of those in a bedside table version. Good luck with your room!
