Hardware--please give ideas!

Hi! I haven't posted before, but have learned a lot reading about everyone's beautiful kitchens.

We are replacing some interior doors during our kitchen remodel. Two are adjacent to the kitchen, others are not "near" the kitchen, but our home is small.

Do the finishes on the door hardware have to match? What looks best?

We will have a pretty big kitchen with white cabinets, stainless sink, stainless trim on oven, and nothing else picked yet. I would really, really like to put an oil-rubbed bronze chandelier on the far end of the kitchen, over a table.

The entry is on the other end. We would also like to put oil-rubbed bronze flush ceiling light fixtures there.

Our contractor ordered the interior doors with brass hardware, but they're not yet up & hardware can be changed for a price. He did install the doors adjacent to the kitchen already with brass hardware/knobs, and they probably can't be changed.

I am open as to cabinet pulls and pendant light hardware, but had envisioned silvery (chrome or satin nickel) OR oil rubbed bronze.

I can still make changes, so I'd rather deal with it now if it's a problem.

I could have posted this in "Decorating", but have not ever visited that forum & admire the knowledge here. I might cross-post.

    do post there also.

I see no problem with your ORB ceiling lights.

if you don't like the brass on the door, it can be changed out. if you like it, keep it!

they don't all have to match. I wouldn't probably have some doors with brass and some with brushed nickel tho. I'd keep doors w/like hardware. kitchen cabs w/like hardware (not change w/in the cabinets).

im not sure yet if I'll have nickel or ORB kitchen cab hardware but my ceiling lites will most likely be brushed nickel. the hall light might be ORB tho. I haven't decided yet. but mixing those up doesn't bother me.

BTW... you CAN change out the hardware if you chose even once it's there. Anything can be done for some $$. If you're not handy, that's a simple handyman job that you can hire out.

Thank you very much, desertsteph and remodelfla, for your replies.

So it sounds like the doors throughout should pretty much match. This is helpful. Also, the contractor ordered raised panel doors. A friend told me not to put in raised panel since my kitchen cabinets won't be raised panel!

All of these decisions...I never thought to plan out such little details before the remodel even began. It's so helpful to have this forum. I've gotten great ideas here.

    Hi Molly.

I agree with everyone else. Do the ORB light fixtures if that's what you love. Everything does not have to match. I would match the all the doors to each other though.

I, personally, would not do stainless pulls, ORB light fixtures and brass door hardware. I know it'll cost a little extra do do it, but I'd have the doors changed now. I'd rather have everything done correctly the way I want it done NOW while all the work is going on. Having to go back later to change the doors when everything else is finished might not happen in my house. ;)

You can certainly do raised panel doors with non-raised cabs. Will your cabs be Shaker style? I, being as OCD as possible, am having my new Shaker-ish panel interior doors similar to my new cabs. But that's just me. And I don't like raised panel doors either. If you love the doors, keep them.

You'll have even more tiny, minute details to consider as you get farther along. Have you planned your outlets yet? Placement? Orientation? Geesh, don't get me started on those!! ;)

What annoys me is that things were ordered without being discussed with the homeowner. I made our gc swap out the hardware when he ordered brass for our french door. The entire house has chrome hardware, yet he went and ordered/installed brass. Luckily, I happened to have picked up chrome hinges from the Restore for no particular reason a few months before, so had those on hand. I think a simple sit down with an itemized list prior to order should have been discussed. I had made our wishes clear in that all hardware be chrome or at least some sort of silver, yet he managed to order yellow brass anyway.... It reminds me of telling our sons to clean their rooms. You know they heard you yet it does not get done easily....

Thanks for your post, Breezygirl. Okay, I am going to talk with my contractor tomorrow. I know from speaking with him that it will not be a big deal on the doors that have yet to be installed, but there's one exterior door right off the kitchen and another off the kitchen. They have been installed and have brass, and I got the impression that I couldn't change it on those. Also, since my cabinets haven't been installed, I haven't chosen hardware. I ordered white cabinets (inset, flat panel--is that what they call the opposite of raised panel?). I already ordered a stainless steel farmhouse sink (had to order special cabinet for this).
All I know is that I definitely want an ORB chandelier above the table. I'm thinking ORB pulls and pendant hardware to match, or satin chrome or nickel pulls (will go w/stainless sink).
I'm going to ask contractor for another day to decide & research more.
Architect planned outlets, but I had not yet thought of plates for them.
I am thinking ORB hardware on the interior (white) doors. Or should we just keep brass on all doors? (Not my favorite option. I don't dislike brass, but I was thinking of a different scheme.)
It helps to post here and get great ideas.

I know, Dianalo. We planned everything out, but these "little" decisions are things we didn't foresee, and they seem sprung on us. We are otherwise quite happy with our contractor, but we need to sit down and discuss the planning in more detail. Thanks!

Thank you again, Desertsteph. I wake up thinking about fixture colors! I think your ideas are realistic and a good way to keep it in perspective. Thanks!
