Class project idea-Would this be helpful?

I've noticed that some student have problems understanding about grout lines...consistancy, width, how they relate to the design, and what too much thinset the squishes up between shards looks like when grouted(with a different color than the thinset). Would a short project involving one color help in learning about successfully working with the lines between the shards? A small 4"x4" trivet project say using shards of one color tile(maybe beige?) concentrating on the lines in between? Do you guys think it would help my students?

Hey now, that's an excellant idea. Seeing as we learn so much frm each project experience. YES yes yes... and great that you can actually make them concentrate on the grout lines by refraining the use of color and working only with shape and spacing.

How many people do you teach at once? Maybe include a 10 min speil about such occurances...and then watch em like a hawk to see if they obey!!!haha!!

I think that would be an excellent idea. Hands on is always best IMO

This is a great idea, and I appreciate it as I have had several people suggest I teach a beginner's class as well (which is appropriate, me being a beginner myself and all!) I can use all the help and suggestions I can get!

The class can be as large a 15 student tho so far it has been much smaller. I've found once they get going on their stepping stones the ideas vary some much my eyes see the shard design they are making that sometimes both the student and I miss a bad grout line til they go to grout(then too late for them to fix). I do talk to them about consistant lines and that grout lines look much larger once grouted and such but since they have never done this before they don't get it til the first project is done. The stone is generally the first project and the biggest project, I think they would be happier if they could work out those first project mistakes on a small less involved project. They could also get a better grasp of nipping and hammering before starting the stone.

Veronica-I'm a beginning teacher when it come to mosaics, I'm still working the kinks out. I'm learning much from my students and trying to adapt the class to what I learn. Teaching adults one must learn to be flexible, they consider my class to be recreation(de-stress and unload time) so I try to accomadate them and make it as interesting and fun as I can.

Pea, you have discovered a great teaching strategy. By starting with a small project, the students can focus one technique at a time. Then you build their skills so they can finish the class with a larger project that they are proud of and will leave with great satisfaction.
