Just responded to the thread about adhesives for the column, in which I said that if I can no longer find Mapei, then I'll make my own formula using sand/cement/laytex.

Frankly I don't care what brand as long as they sell it in smaller size packages. Lowes is the only place around here that sells grout and thinset in something smaller than a 25 pound bag.

TASY: LOL at that. PEA - I wouldn't THINK of buying less than 25 lbs. I was trying to find a path through all the junk yesterday in the garage and ran across a 25 lb bag I forgot I had. I finished the shrine today, after I worked in the garden, weeding a huge flowerbed. Tomorrow, after more weeding, if this deluge stops, I'm going to begin mosaicing the backs of those concrete blocks I did last week. I'm trying to decide what project to begin next. I like mosaicing those little blocks so much, and they're so handy for pot risers, I might make some more. They're quick and easy to do.

I myself buy the big bags but my students need smaller bags. Many of my students are older ladies and lugging around two 25 pound bags of thinset and grout is not possible plus once they got their stuff to class where would we store it. The 10 pounds bags from Lowes work fairly well. One 10 pound bag is more than enough for the projects we do in class(I encourage them get together with another student and buy if they can agree on a color cause 10 lbs is enough for 2 student's class projects). p

If you go to the Mapei site and enter your zip, it will give you the closest locations within a designated mileage radius. Lowe's is listed for me, but so are other businesses.

I've found sometimes you can get special deals from other companies/contractors if you talk to them. They buy in such bulk of certain things selling to you for cheap is no big deal. And the amount is insignificant to them, but big for you.

Hee hee! Shop at Slow's Not Lowes!!!! I feel blessed cuz there are tons of places to buy grout /mortar here, I go to a place called Tile City and it is now my fav place to go drool!!! They are very helpful and that's where I direct all my questions...when Slow isn't available!LOL! The weather freezes up here and I've decided to make stuff from tougher material, like slate and such, so gotta get that saw...

when I was very first into doing any mosaics and didn't know piddly, I went to a flooing store and asked if they had any tag end bags of grout.
I didn't care what color it was at all..it just needed to be sanded.
I ended up with 9 bags of varying amounts of grout in each bag.
got greens, browns, grey, white, black

and I think I paid like a couple of dollars for each bag..
the manager said it was fun, to just empty the shelf and start over again.
cool guy....cool deal.

I still have a half gallon of the fortifier left, from when I was casting leaves in cement and use that with the grout now.

Lowe's here in Western NC are not carrying Mapei brand anymore either... they must have donated what they had left to the Habitat Thrift Store. I bought several of 3.5 gal. buckets of premix thin set for $10 a bucket, small bags of grout for $3; 25# bags for $9, jugs of fortifier for $4. So I'm pretty stocked for a while.
