Curtain Help!

I hung my curtains high and wide but now I am wondering if I hung them too high. The windows have been naked for so long I am not sure if it is just taking some getting use or what. I would love any opinions/ help or suggestions. Thanks!

well first of all, your room is gorgeous!!! but i'm afraid to say i think your gut is right - they look too high and wide to me.

to me, hanging curtains high should elongate and make the windows look grander. this sort of makes your windows look short and stout. :( ugh what a pain to rehang them though.

Yup, gorgeous room, lovely drapes, but too high. I'd hang them about halfway between the top of the window frame and the ceiling.

I don't think that they are too wide, but they look a bit too high to me. One thing that some people have done is to fill in that space with a woven wood shade mounted under the drapes. I know that examples of that have been posted here, but here's a rough mock up:

Agree with daisy- about 1/2 way between top of window and ceiling. I don't think they're too wide. Beautiful room!

Good looking room and great furniture, but here are my opinion on the curtains:

The rod should be placed about 3-4 inches above the top of the window. Then the curtain should be allowed to only come a half inch or so off the ground (you don't want it dragging on the floor) Then I would open the curtains up a little to add depth to the room.

All of my curtains in my house are done with way, the same style, but different colors. Here's the ones in my master. I opened up each panel so they are a good 2' wide. Each panel is placed directly in the middle of the side of each window. A foot of the panel goes into the window pane and a foot goes into the wall. This gives the appearance of a very wide bold window.

Here's a quick photochop of what yours should look like:

Thank you so much! I really appreciate everyone's help. I lowered one to see how it looks. But before I do the rest I want to make sure it is low enough. I think it looks much better!

I went to houzz.com and searched "drapes." It runs the gamut---some are all the way to the ceiling, some are half way and some are right above the window. So, I guess it is a matter of personal taste. I thought the trend now was to go all the way to the ceiling but apparently not. I think it may also depend on how high your ceilings are. I have 7.5 ceilings so I hung mine at the top to make the ceiling seem higher.

Joanipoani - It all depends on personal taste... what looks good in my home may not look good in someone else's and vise versa. When it comes to curtains, I've always felt that curtains that are hung to high above the window make the window look "top heavy" if that makes any sense. To eliminate this, I always prefer more wall space from the bottom of the window to the floor than from the top of the window to the curtain rod. But that's just for me... there is no wrong or right... just what you prefer.

lorishopaholic - It looks much better, still a little to tall for my taste, but 100 times better than mounting them at the very top.

Very lovely room! I think they look nicer lower too. I also think that since they are such wide windows by design and not very tall that the curtains hung wide is not helping but rather hindering the effect to elongate them. I like curtain edges to cover at least an inch of glass on each side and cover all inside moulding. Can you pull them closed a bit for if you can make them look a tad thinner you might actually achieve an elongated look. Another thought is that maybe a third middle panel for the double window might make them appear less stout.

Thanks again! Here is a picture of it with the third panel as suggested. Thoughts?

Love it with the third panel. Perfect!

I also love the look of the third panel and the lower height.

Beautiful home! Third panel gives a great look!

I like the third panel too and the height looks way better.
I also think adding some crown molding would make the window look more finished. Maybe try to also make them hang more evenly, by making the pleats more distinct, and play with the puddling so they all match.

I hate drapes! They are so hard to get just right.

Lori, I agree with the new placements. It looks much better. I also think crown molding would enhance the room/wall. Pretty room!

You may want to shorten the drapes now that they're lower.

Also, to get drapes to hang nicely, hand pleat them so the center of each pinch pleat is out...the should fold back and forth nicely on each other...the full length of the drape, tying it loosely with yarn to hold the soft pleats. Leave them that way for about a week. When you untie them, they will look much nicer.

Yours won't be as heavy as this, but this gives you the idea of what I'm talking about.

I did like Annie's pic above, but only tied the tops because I like the silk sort of ballooning out at the bottom rather than straight pleats all the way down - just to give you another option.

I think you hit the mark in your last picture. Looks great!

having a 3rd panel on the right double window and the not the left double window doesn't look right to my eye--looks unbalanced- even if the right window is abit wider. i personally would leave a panel at either end, but maybe add another panels to the ends to bulk up the material at the ends, esp on the wider window.

i would probably lower the panels another couple of inches, but they do look much better now! :)

    You got it! Looks fantastic!

busybee3, I think she's just testing the 3rd panel on the right.......and will add a 3rd on the left.

One thing, IMO, that is throwing the windows off is the lower half of the divider is wider than the top half. Adding the 3rd panel covers that distraction.......at least for me. : )

I would also suggest pulling the drapes away a few inches from the fireplace. It looks too crowded, with no room to breathe.
