WOW! That is awesome! I was thinking of making a chess board for a friend...I would want it more girly....but what size tiles do you use? Do you cut them yourself?

Cindiloo, Yes, I cut the tiles out of glass. They're 1.75 inches.

rchovey, It's made from MDF. I had the guy at Home Depot cut it 17 inches square for me. All I had to do was sand the edges a little. I think I'm going to had some wooden round disks on the bottom for feet...wanna raise it off the table a little bit so the kids don't knock the chess men around so much. Thanks for the nice compliment!

Darlin' child, and oh, such another beautiful board. Very masculine, and professionally done. Do you just paint the edges of the MDF? The feet w/be nice on it.

Slow, Thanks. I thought about painting the edges of the MDF, but the grout came out to be the same color as it is. So I've left it plain. I was thinking a think piece of decorative our just rounded moulding could be nailed/glued around the edges to give it a more finished touch.

Looks good just as it is. These are REALLY nice boards. I've noted the sizes you mentioned, so if I'm asked again by my HM to make one for him, I'll know where to start.

Also, you can see the little home made chessmen that my children made. We were in a cruch and didn't have time to buy some chessmen online. These turned out pretty cute and the kids had fun participating in the making of the set. Their Dad flipped!

Lisa, I'm sure your DH loved it all the more because it was a gift from EVERYONE!!!!! Your kids must have been beaming from ear to ear knowing they helped make dad's gift! What a wonderful, beautiful project!!!

OHGOODGRIEF! What beautiful gifts, and congrats on a family project! I'm REALLY impressed w/these, and had a conversation w/my HM today. I sent him several websites for pieces. I can't start his until he finds the pieces so I'll know what size board. LOVE the finished pieces - the feet really add.

Hazie, We picked up a bunch of little wooden odds and ends from the craft store...spools, beads, stars (for the king), discs...stuff like that...and just glued them together and painted one set and stained another. They work, and they are kinda cute!
