Do these rugs work?

These rugs just arrived and I'm trying to decide if they work. Is the smaller 5 x 7 in front of fireplace too small? Is the larger tan 9 x 12 too plain? How is the placement?

Working on a family room reno -- and still decorating (need some artwork, waiting for delivery of an end table and lamp), all ideas welcome, but I'm focused on rugs at the moment.

What a pretty room! I'm no expert, but I think the 5x7 is too small. The placement of the tan rug looks fine, but I don't think the color does anything for your room. I think it's okay to have 2 different oriental rug patterns in the same room as long as the main field colors are similar.

I agree with chickadee. An oriental rug that is larger, to take the place of the plainer rug (which seems to be an OK size) would really set off the leather furniture and wood floor. I can't see the entire room, but is there a chance you could buy one huge oriental that will fit all the seating area?

Here is a link that might be useful:

    Pretty room.

A friend of mine had a similar set-up to yours: sofa with rug, 2 chairs flanking the fireplace with rug. She used two coordinating, but not matching, Karastan rugs. It looked beautiful. Her intention, which appears to be yours as well, was to set off the area next to the fireplace as a cozy place to have a conversation, so she didn't want to include it as part of the other seating area. I think your solid rug with an oriental looks accidental. A 6 by 9 would probably work better than the 5 by 7, and do 2 orientals or 2 coordinating with small patterns.

It's super easy to post a pic from Photobucket. Just copy and paste the HTML code

    Pretty room.

What's across from the sofa in front of the bookcases? I ask because I wonder if you placed the paisley ottoman in front of the coffee table if you would achieve a better balance of patterns and let the plain rug be a backdrop instead of, well, plain. ;-)

Thanks for the input. I think I agree that 2 coordinating orientals are probably the way to go. These are both from pottery barn -- PB does not sell 6 x 9s unfortunately. I love the charcoal ground on the smaller rug -- and how it works with the charcoal granite on the fireplace. Maybe I use this rug for the 9 x 12 and find another smaller rug?

I tried moving the ottoman in front of the coffee table (at an angle on the corner of the tan rug) and it does help break up all of the tan. I bought the ottoman to go with the 2 chairs, but I have the feeling it will be a floating piece. My daughter immediately pounced on it to watch TV when I moved it. A small glass coffee table might be nice with the 2 chairs, non?

My intent is to have a smaller seating area in front of the fireplace. It is such a large room that I wanted to try to break it up into separate areas to make it a bit more cozy. Although, a decorator did recommend one large rug.

I also went with very neutral furniture so I could have fun with rugs and pillows -- so I think I should aim for more color with rugs. and my husband chose the very neutral paint. There is also a window seat between the book cases that will need some cushions, pillows, etc. so I can add some color there, too.

    I appreciate the ideas...more welcome!

I like the idea of one large rug with pattern/color. You can still have separate seating areas just by how you position the furniture.

I guess the tv is across from the sofa. Can the ottoman run parallel to the sofa by the bookcases and still be usable? The large rug, albeit a bit too light in the pix, carries the tan from the chairs over to the sofa area, so that may be in its favor. But it is light, and neutral non-patterned rugs do show dirt more, so that's against keeping it. As Dee said, it may just look unplanned.

I think you certainly can put complementary patterned rugs in your family room, and most have advised you to do so. I'd be open to keeping the ones you have if you break up that expanse with the paisley, but need more pix to determine if it's just okay or better than that.

I also can't tell from that one shot posted if the smaller rug is too small. Would a 6 x 9 clear the hearth or would you have to encroach upon the larger rug? It looks like they're just over a foot apart though perspective may be off. If it's truly that close, then I'd not opt to go larger.

Oui, to a round table between the chairs though you have lots of options on material. Happy decorating!

I love your room. May I ask where you got your coffee table?

the TV is across from the sofa. i will attempt to post a couple more pics -- one with the ottoman moved to the tan rug (which does help). I am concerned about the tan rug showing too much dirt.

There is plenty of room for a 6 x 9 rug. It would be a better option -- but tough to find. One large rug would have to be a 13 x 18 or 12 x 18 -- also hard to find.

Tuesday, the coffee table is from Ethan Allen -- it's their Tango Map table.

I'm thinking a large square glass top table might work better than the chest you have now. Yours looks great when you look at it with the long part facing the one sofa, but I'm wondering if you took a picture with your back to the fireplace, if the table isn't looking a little off with the other sofa because that's the narrow side facing you. Did that make sense? If you got a square coffee table, you could use that ottoman as a floater and put it in front of the table on one of the other sides. Then if you wanted to sit on one of the chairs and read by the fire, you could pull the ottoman over and put your feet up.

You have a lot of room in there to add more furniture and lighting. I can picture a table with a lamp next to each chair to bring more lighting to that area besides the lights overhead and also have a place to rest drinks when you entertain. You've got wonderful natural light to bring in some large plants.

Thanks for the new pix. Yes, FP rug is definitely too small. Sorry, but I think both really need to be returned.

I think I'd swap the tan for the larger one like the FP oriental since you realy like it, and it will carry the stone color over. Or you can start from scratch as you really have lots of palette options.

The ottoman on an angle bothers me, but that's just me as I'd prefer it running like the coffee table. I also like your idea of it adding some richness between the chairs, but you have to find a color and pattern for the new rug that won't fight the ottoman if you use it as you originally intended.

You shouldn't have too much difficulty finding a 6 x 9 as that's a very common size even if PB doesn't carry them, but maybe measure to see if an 8 X 10 would work if you scoot the sofa rug toward the windows a bit. I know others will have wonderful suggestions. Good luck!

It is hard to tell from the glare, but it seems the tan rug is sitting way too far down in the seating space. Is there a reason you don't have it pulled closer to the seating pieces, so that they are actually sitting on the rug? Seems like a lot of bare rug on one end, and the couches barely touching the rug on the other. I don't mind the tan rug, though I would like it more with some kind of colored banding on the edges, perhaps to pull an accent color from the other rug. Once you get art on the wall above the couch, some lamps in the room, and accent pillows, the plain beige rug will work just fine.

The fireplace rug is too small. Have you considered a round rug there? Might be a nice visual break, so that there is no sense that you couldn't get two matching rectangular rugs. I think the pattern is great.

Great advice given, good luck with whatever you decide to do.
Beautiful room, you have lovely things! Is that the Diana pillow, BTW? I just ordered one yesterday!

i think either one very large rug (like the fireplace rug) with 2 separate seating areas on the one rug OR a rug similar in size to the cream rug(but nicely patterned like the fireplace rug) and then have the couple of chairs in front of the fireplace on the wood with no additional rug--- either of those options is how i would handle that room.

Hopmom, what a gorgeous room! I love all the natural light. I think I'd be tempted to splurge on one big rug. You could still have two separate seating areas, but a single rug would make the room feel more cohesive.

Btw, are your leather sofas also from Ethan Allen? And are they as comfortable as they look?

Thanks for all the advice and compliments on the room. I will be doing some more rug shopping -- not sure yet if I'll go with 2 complimentary patterned rugs or one large one.

chickadee, you are correct that a square table would probably work better, but I won't be changing that one anytime soon. I have debated on which way to turn it, but I think it makes sense to have it face the entry way.

Les, the tan rug is centered in the room -- it's a large 24 x 24 room so there is plenty of floor space that is not showing on the other end. We thought about a sisal with colored border, but were advised against it with kids -- difficult to clean.

Loribee, yes, it's the Diana pillow (bought them for my bedroom, but thought I'd try them here) -- they are pretty.

Natal, no the sofas are not EA, they are made by Futura Leather -- very comfortable down filled cushions (although I wish the back cushions were not as floppy looking).

    Thanks everyone!

Okay, so I have returned the two rugs to Pottery Barn and I'm starting from scratch.

A few ideas...I found this rug in a 12 x 18 -- and could do one large rug. It might be drab -- but I'm concerned about doing too much color/pattern with a rug that large.

Another option would be two of these rugs -- the red 6 x 9 by the chairs, and the tan 9 x 12 by the sofas.

    {{!gwi}}

And my third consideration is to find one 6 x 9 oriental and a 9 x 12 jute or sisal with a colored border (the pottery barn braided jute with border is softer than most sisals). Obviously the natural fiber rugs are a more casual look. I'm also seeing a lot of rug layering in magazines -- so maybe a large 12 x 18 jute rug and layer a 6 x 9 oriental by the fireplace.

The more thought I give this, the more confused I get. What would you do?

I really like the smaller PB one by your fireplace, but agree that it's too small.

The large cream rug currently in the room doesn't look like it's the right proportions. I keep expecting to see another couch on the bottom part. With that being open (or at least looking open) it has a runway feel to it.

The rug in my great room is a bit similar to the large one you found, but don't have. I'm not sure I'd love it in your space though. Are you planning on WTs? And if so, what are you planning on? That might make a difference.

I really like natural fiber rugs, but probably not in your space. They tend to read beige, and with beige walls, cream trim, cream chairs... I think you might wish you had a bit more warmth/broader palette on the floor.

Here's another photo that shows that other end of the room (or that part of the room) -- the TV is across from the sofas and the entry way to the the kitchen.

I'm not sure what I'm doing for window treatments -- possibly roman shades. I also have a large window seat between the book cases that I need to have cushions and pillows made for. I agree that I need some color.

Love the new rug in tan...very pretty, but I wouldn't do 1 in red. Could you do 1 large and 1 small, both in tan? The rug is neutral enough but has nice interest.

My Diana pillows arrived last night- love them!! :)

I'd just get a big rug! It will be beautiful. Your room can still have separate seating areas. Lucky you to have a space big enough for a 12x18. You don't have any other real pattern yet, and a rug with pattern is gorgeous as well as practical; hides just about anything very well.

The 12 x 18 may not work size wise. You currently have 12' by your sofa and some think it's a bit small. I think the 9 X 12 is fine, but I'm in the two rugs camp. I like seeing the HW and having a non-carpeted path aligning with the kitchen entrance.

I don't know what your budget is, but jockewing found a gorgeous rug for his LR on ebay. His is not in your color scheme, but beautiful rugs are out there and he was able to negotiate a bit with the seller. Tufenkian has an on-line outlet, as do other mfrs. I'd keep looking as a quality rug will outlast you and can anchor a room through transitions over the years, so it's important to get one you really like if you're not the type to go w/ a discardable cheapie. The natural fibers can be wonderful, but as you said will take you in a different direction that you originally wanted.

The tan you selected might be nice in a smaller size for the sofa area if the field color is not too mustardy. I once ordered what was described as a neutal tan on-line and had to return it as it screamed orange. The more open pattern may work with your paisley better than the paisley looked with the charcoal on my screen. IRL it might have been perfect though. If you go with two rugs, you could bring in complementary colors with more vibrant tones and/or intricate pattern by the FP. Others will have a different solution as this is very subjective. Whatever you decide that you prefer, please template the size(s) before purchasing. You can use blue tape or books or kitchen spoons, but you really need to mark out what you want as returning large rugs can get old quickly, at least for me. HTH!

After seeing the kitchen walkway to your living room, I change my mind. I agree with abundant about not wanting rugs in that pathway.
I do like the idea of two patterned rugs that are similar, but not identical. I also think the idea of using blue painters tape, yard sticks, newspapers or something to get ideal measurements is the way to go.

I think it would look better if the rug went back further under the wall couch-maybe just move it back a few inches or do they make a 10x12? As I recall, orientals can be found in uncommon sizes (not exact feet).

I also second the idea of taking time to get what you love. I have many more regrets over hasty purchases than long thought over ones.

I like your idea of having a bordered rug. I think Massilon can custom make these type at reasonable prices.

I saw them at a local furniture store and they have a ton of different borders you can use.
