Oh what a cool idea. I LOVE the effect that glass makes on the checkerboard. I, too, love working w/it in spite of it's size - just like working a puzzle. Can't seem to get back to it, though, cuz other stuff keeps butting in front of it. Very nice work, HRSG.

now wait a minute!........you don't actually put in the individual itty bitty pieces?
you use the sections, like as if a jig saw puzzle is put away, with sections still intact?

I sure do like the effect.
the one time I gathered crash glass, it was from the floor of a garage..that was dumb!
next time, if there is one..I'll be sure and ask for 'fresh' glass, right from the vehicle.

sorry for the misfortune of someone having to have trouble with their car windows and hopefully it was with no injuries..I wouldn't like the thought of a terrible accident, being part of a fun mosaic!..ugh.

but it's so far at the bottom of the list of things to be even considered..
your board would be cool, on the wall of a pool room.

Yes, you place each piece separate. Some pieces are clusters, but for the most part the small (okay tiny) pieces are the majority. See the image above for reference.

Covered the whole Chinese checker side, and now onto the regular checkerboard.

I'm thinking black grout, thoughts or ideas? ~: )

What a cool idea,haven't had the nerve to try crashglass yet......so teeny tiny pieces.

Be careful CRACK - it's just as addicting in its own way as mosaics in general. This is wonderful, HRSG - black or charcoal grey is my suggestion.

Helen: That is WONDERFUL. You found a treasure in that piece because it is SO colorful! A dark grout would be nice.

As an aside: I went looking for cheaper glue glass at one of the local businesses here. Found it (much more expensive than HobLob) but asked about safety glass. He said one of the gals that worked there was kind enough to bag some up. She used zip lock storage bags and filled them with safety glass, BUT I swear she had broken up ALL the big pieces into individual pieces. Needless to say, I did not buy (yes, she wanted to sell them) any.

What a great idea! Have to smile... that board brings back SO many memories of my childhood... rainy days... playing C. Checkers and board games with my brother. HE always won! Hey! :)
Anyway... I love it! I'm anxious to see it grouted... can't quite picture it. Your marbles are perfect!

Slow is right about the crash glass being addicting. I've found myself now with at least 3 other crash glass to do's on my list. LOL!

Great idea hrsg, I've done a few things out of crash glass..I love using the individual pieces. I will post what I recently did on a different thread.

The black or grey grout will look beautiful on it. The checkerboard is gonna turn out cool also. Are you gonna put real checkers on it??? Even if you dont it will be cool.

Glad this reminded you of your crash glass star. I'm hoping to find some checkers to use on the other side, so I may have to visit the thrift store tomorrow. ~: )

Where did you get yours? Do you just have to be in the right place at the right time? Or do you just accidently smash a window with a crow-bar?

My sister gets the glass for me from a car place she works near. They give her big garbage bags whenever she asks.

Got started on the checkerboard side last night. Did not have any checkers so I made my own.

Hope to get more done today, but have a busy schedule.

WHAT is crash glass? Like from a car crash?

Gonna be another special piece. KELLY - it's safety glass - car windows, shower doors, sliding patio doors, store fronts etc. Breaks beautifully by hand - no scoring, breaking like regular glass, just work it like a puzzle - VERY small pieces, but if you get someone to give it to you that knows what you're doing w/it, they can keep the clusters together so they won't break completely apart.

Got the checkerboard covered today after all. So now I hope to grout both sides tomorrow. ~: )

Still need to do the final cleaning on thses, but that will have to wait. I'm going out of town Sunday - Wednesday, and have tons to do beforehand. But I wanted to post the pieces grouted. Have to say I'm not crazy about them at this point.Hopefully once I do the final cleaning they will improve somehow, lol.

I REALLY LIKE them!!! Especially the checkerboard! That is very cool! The colors came through very nicely!

Slow- Thanks for the lesson. Very informative. Safety glass...huh...have to start thinking of people I know who might be able to get me some broken stuff! I mean who wouldn't want to do that?!?

hrsg- To be completely honest with you, when I scrolled down and saw the updates, I thought, "Oh no! She grouted them." But then I saw you weren't too crazy about them, I looked at them again, and began to appreciate them more! (I'm strange like that.) Now I can see the regular checkers one hanging around my town somewhere. (Our school colors are red and black...and people around here bleed Jackson Indian red and black. Me included.) And the chinese checker one, I appreciate it for all the crazy fun stuff going on. So now I'm thinking, "Hell ya, she grouted 'em!!"

For me, the clean up of crash glass makes all the difference - that stuff has to be polished to a shine and it will look awesome

The checkers side looks great. I think you'll be happier with the Chinese side after it's cleaned up. I think they both look good!!

both look good...but if you decide you don't like the star grouted black remember you can possibly change it with a color wash...once its cleaned and polished though you will probably really like it!!!!
