Ceramic and glass kiln???

Is there such a creature that you can do both?? Klinger and I were discussing going 1/2ies on a kiln, and we both want to do tiles and such to enhance our mosaics!!lol! and so I'm wondering if a kiln can do both, well, not at the same time, but you know...

The gal at the stained glass shop here told me last year when I wanted a glass saw that I should just get a kiln instead and I thought, oh sheesh, a whole new kettle of fish as it needs different glass and such and no way I'm goin' there.....welll...looks like it can't be avoided!heh heh! If nothing else they rent the kilns at the store, and there's a $75 course to learn how....I guess I'd better get that printing press in my secret room warmed up!heh heh! Or grow a money tree!!!ya!

I think the answer is YES, absolutely! In fact, the glass emporium I just visited in Shreveport had a ceramic kiln that they use for fusing. I seem to remember that when Slow and I visited the store that closed in LR, they convinced her not to get too small a kiln so that she could do ceramics and glass. Unfortunately, she never got the kiln.....Just make sure you get one with all the bells and whistles so the guess work is taken out of the equation.

Glass slumping used to be taught at the school where i teach. The teacher had the school buy a computerized Skutt(both pottery and glass friendly), I use the same kiln now for my pottery class. She didn't get a kiln sitter installed tho...I really would like to have a kiln sitter on it in case the computer malfunctions.

Paragon have the Janus range. The 16" is very good.

I'm lookin into the paragon kiln site and they are just east of Dallas!!!

Paragon is a great kiln. I've got an ancient one in the garage that was working up until hurricane Charley(2004) blew thru and damaged it now it sparks. The owner of the company posts on the clayart listserve sometimes. The archived clayart posts can be found here: http://www.potters.org

I've been obsessing about researching this and it has been opening up a lot of choice in the mosaicing idea department!!! Can't do anything right now about it tho as I promised myself I'd keep up the landscaping project...but it's a nice break when I come in, to check up on all you gals and surf for kilns!

If my old brain is remembering right .... the difference has something to do with the placements of the coils. I talked about this once when I took fusing classes. Glass kilns have coils on the lid , don't they ? And ceramic kilns don't. I assume glass needs more direct heat on the top for fusing & slumping. How's that for writing a post on something I barely know anything about!! LOL
