Repair 'Ding' and 'scratch' on dinning table

have a scratch and a "Ding" (dropped the briefcase)

I read or heard that you can take a damp cloth and an Iron and that this would help swell the wood, thereby having an even surface.

Than use wet sandpaper very fine and sand lightly, and than apply a thin coat of varnish, feathering out.

Is this correct?
